Valls
Valls () is a city and municipality in the province of Tarragona in Catalonia, Spain. According to the 2014 census it has a population of 24,570. Valls is known for its calçots – a type of scallion or green onion – and the human towers tradition known as the castells. The town is the birthplace of the composer Robert Gerhard (1896–1970). Geography Valls is the capital of the ''comarca'' of Alt Camp. With a population of 24,570 inhabitants in 2014, it represents more than half of the population of the county. It is located in the area known as Camp de Tarragona next to the River Francolí, near Reus (Baix Camp) and Tarragona (Tarragonès), the capital of the province. Culture Valls is known for its culinary tradition, the feasting on calçots at what is known as a "calçotada". Francisco Valls or Francesc Valls (Barcelona 1665/1671 - 2 February 1747) was a Spanish composer, theorist and '' mestre de capella.'' Among his most known works are the mass ''Missa Scala Aretina'' and tract ''Mapa Armónico Práctico''. Life In 1696 Francisco Valls left the Church of Santa Maria del Mar, Barcelona, and took up the post of '' Mestre de capella'' at Barcelona Cathedral. He wrote 10 masses, 17 psalm settings, 30 motets, several other sacred items and 141 secular compositions. Many of these are manuscripts lodged in the Biblioteca de Catalunya in Barcelona. Rafael Valls Ferri (born 25 June 1987) is a Spanish professional road bicycle racer, who last rode for UCI WorldTeam . Career Born in Cocentaina, Valls left at the end of the 2013 season, and joined for the 2014 season. Oriol Valls
Oriol Tomas Valls (born 1947 in Barcelona, Spain) is a physics professor at the University of Minnesota. After obtaining his BSc in Physics at the University of Barcelona he earned a PhD at Brown University, in 1976. After a postdoctoral position at the University of Chicago he held a Miller Fellowship at the University of California Berkeley before joining the University of Minnesota faculty. He specializes in Condensed Matter Theory. He is an American Physical Society fellow since 1998 (search on year=1998 and institution=University of Minnesota) and has won the APS Outstanding Referee Award. Manuel Valls (composer)
Manuel Valls i Gorina (; 21 July 1920 – 1984) was a Spanish composer, pianist, music critic, and music educator. Valls was born in Badalona. He was a first cousin of painter Xavier Valls, himself the father of former French Prime Minister Manuel Valls. He studied at the University of Barcelona and the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu. At the Liceu he was mentored by Aita Donostia with whom he studied music theory, music composition, and orchestration. He became a successful composer writing symphonic works, chamber music, choral music, operas, art songs, and songs for solo piano. Manuel Carlos Valls Galfetti (, , ; born 13 August 1962) is a French-Spanish politician who has served as a Barcelona city councillor from 2019 to 2021. Jorge Valls Arango (February 2, 1933 – October 22, 2015) was a Cuban activist and poet of who spent more than two decades in prison for his opposition to Fidel Castro. He was born in Mañanan, now part of Havana. He was the son of a Catalan father and Cuban mother, and could read and write Catalan. Dino Valls is a Spanish painter born in 1959 in Zaragoza. Building on a childhood passion for drawing, Valls taught himself to paint in oils beginning in 1975. After completing his degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1982, Valls devoted himself full-time to the profession of painting. As one of the Spanish representatives of the vanguard of figurative art, Valls' work displays the strong influence of past masters and their studies of the human being.
