Valley Creek (Minnesota)
Valley Creek, sometimes called Bolles Creek, is a small stream in Washington County, Minnesota, United States. It is one of the few remaining trout streams in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Approximately long, the stream begins in Woodbury, Minnesota, and flows into the St. Croix River at Afton, Minnesota. Valley Creek is notable as the location of the first private gristmill in Minnesota. It was built in 1846 by Lemuel Bolles several hundred feet upstream from the confluence with the St. Croix. Bolles' nephew, Erastus Bolles, built an additional mill and a blacksmith shop farther upstream. Valley Creek is a tributary of the Schuylkill River in eastern Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States, flowing through an area known as the Great Valley.U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map accessed April 1, 2011 Around 1740 a forge was erected along Valley Creek near its confluence with the Schuylkill. This gave rise to the community of Valley Forge. Later the creek powered a saw mill and grist mill there. In 1777, the forge and mills were destroyed by the British Army during the American Revolutionary War. In December 1777, George Washington chose Valley Forge as the site for the winter encampment of the Continental Army partly because Valley Creek and the Schuylkill River formed natural defensive barriers for the rear of the camp.
