Valle Soprana
Valle Soprana is a small village in the province of Teramo, in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. It is a ''frazione'' of the town of Teramo. Geography Valle Soprana lies about six miles from Teramo, near the edge of the Gran Sasso National Park. Leading up to the ridge of f the Asino Hills, the countryside surrounding Valle Soprana is characterized by a series of trails ( tratturi) that in the past were used by shepherds in their yearly migration of sheep (transhumance) from the Abruzzo to the Apulia and Lazio regions of Italy. Valle Soprana sits on the banks of a stream called the Fiumiciello, a small tributary of the Tordino river. The provincial road SP47, which runs from Frondarola to Pagliaroli, transverses the town. Valle San Giovanni
Valle San Giovanni is a small village in the province of Teramo, in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. It is a ''frazione'' of the town of Teramo. Geography The village has a population of about 350 people and lies about six miles from Teramo. The Adriatic Sea and the Gran Sasso are about 25 km away. It sits in the Tordino Valley, near the spot where two small streams, the Lete and the Fiumicello, flow into the Tordino river. Located off the main ''piazza'', Largo della Chiesa, is Via del Casale. The residents of Valle San Giovanni call themselves "Vallaroli". Adjacent to Valle San Giovanni are the nearby villages of Frondarola, Travazzano and Valle Soprana. Frondarola
Frondarola is a small town in the province of Teramo in the Abruzzo region of Italy, population about 200. It lies at an altitude of 1502 feet above sea level and is located about 5 miles from Teramo, of which it is a ''frazione''. History Archeological evidence points to the existence of Frondarola in the pre-Roman era, although the name comes from the Latin ''furnus arola'', land belonging to the Furnus family. The earliest known public document referencing the town is found in an act in which Count Trasmondo di Sifredo donates the Castle of Fornarolo to the church "Aprutina" in the year 1076. Approximately 10 years later Count Teutone di Ranieri mentions the passing of this donation to Ugone, Bishop of Teramo. Following its destruction 1156 by the Loretello's mercenary troops, the noblemen living in Frondarola fled to the surrounding countryside and villas. Tordino
The Tordino is a river flowing in the province of Teramo, in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. In Roman times it may have been known as "Batinus". The source of the Tordino is located between Monte Gorzano and Pelone, in the Monti della Laga subchain of the Apennines. After a course of , it flows into the Adriatic Sea. The river initially flows in a torrent to the east through the Gran Sasso National Park, then directs to the north around Mount Bilanciere before flowing in a south-easterly direction. The river curves northward near Torricella Sicura and flows past Teramo. The river flows northeast past San Nicolò a Tordino and Castellalto before flowing into the Adriatic Sea near Giulianova and Cologna Spiaggia. Transhumance
Transhumance is a type of pastoralism or nomadism, a seasonal movement of livestock between fixed summer and winter pastures. In montane regions (''vertical transhumance''), it implies movement between higher pastures in summer and lower valleys in winter. Herders have a permanent home, typically in valleys. Generally only the herds travel, with a certain number of people necessary to tend them, while the main population stays at the base. Gran Sasso
Gran Sasso d'Italia (; ) is a massif in the Apennine Mountains of Italy. Its highest peak, Corno Grande (2,912 metres), is the highest mountain in the Apennines, and the second-highest mountain in Italy outside the Alps. The mountain lies within Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park.
