Valle San Giovanni
Valle San Giovanni is a small village in the province of Teramo, in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. It is a ''frazione'' of the town of Teramo. Geography The village has a population of about 350 people and lies about six miles from Teramo. The Adriatic Sea and the Gran Sasso are about 25 km away. It sits in the Tordino Valley, near the spot where two small streams, the Lete and the Fiumicello, flow into the Tordino river. Located off the main ''piazza'', Largo della Chiesa, is Via del Casale. The residents of Valle San Giovanni call themselves "Vallaroli". Adjacent to Valle San Giovanni are the nearby villages of Frondarola, Travazzano and Valle Soprana. Pope Paul IV, born Gian Pietro Carafa, C.R. ( la, Paulus IV; it, Paolo IV; 28 June 1476 – 18 August 1559) was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 23 May 1555 to his death in August 1559. While serving as papal nuncio in Spain, he developed an anti-Spanish outlook that later coloured his papacy. Transumanza
The ''transumanza'' is the Italian term for transhumance, the traditional twice yearly migration of sheep and cows from the highlands to the lowlands, and back. The word literally means "crossing the land". Ancient custom Transhumance is an ancient Italian custom, today scarcely surviving, by which large flocks of sheep in the mid fall were driven south from the hilly and mountainous regions of the Apennines to winter over in the more southern coastal plains of Apulia and, less commonly, Lazio. Montorio Al Vomano
Montorio al Vomano ( Abruzzese: ') is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Teramo, in the Abruzzo region of central-southern Italy. It is located in the natural park known as the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. Geography The city is located at the upper inland entrance of the Vomano valley, on the banks of the river with the same name. The territory of the Montorio al Vomano commune contains a mountainous area but in larger part is made up of hills and open plains. A hilly incline known as Il Colle (The Hill) leads up from the right bank of this river and provides views of the valley below. ''Frunti'' or ''Fronto'' was an ancient territorial and administrative jurisdiction located in the central part of Italy. The name Frunti exists to this day as a specific geographical location, although in Medieval times the name referred to a larger, more expansive area of land. Frunti is located southwest of Teramo. Geography Valle Soprana lies about six miles from Teramo, near the edge of the Gran Sasso National Park. Frondarola is a small town in the province of Teramo in the Abruzzo region of Italy, population about 200. It lies at an altitude of 1502 feet above sea level and is located about 5 miles from Teramo, of which it is a ''frazione''. History Archeological evidence points to the existence of Frondarola in the pre-Roman era, although the name comes from the Latin ''furnus arola'', land belonging to the Furnus family. The earliest known public document referencing the town is found in an act in which Count Trasmondo di Sifredo donates the Castle of Fornarolo to the church "Aprutina" in the year 1076. Approximately 10 years later Count Teutone di Ranieri mentions the passing of this donation to Ugone, Bishop of Teramo.
