Valerie Thompson (born April 17, 1967) is an American motorcycle drag and land speed racer. She is a 7-time motorcycle land-speed record holder and charter member of the Mojave Magnum "200 MPH Club." In 2012, Thompson was selected to drive the North American Eagle Project jet car for an attempt to break the long-standing land speed record for a woman, set by Kitty O'Neil in December 1976, at . The Project's vehicle did not break O'Neil's record until sometime after Thompson's time with the team, when driver Jessi Combs was killed during deceleration, after an August 2019 run where she set the speed record for a woman, at . Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials (BMST) (AMA Land Speed Grand Championship) is a motorcycle land speed racing event, held annually at Bonneville Speedway, US. The event is sanctioned by American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). AMA-certified US National land speed records, and FIM-certified Land speed world records are created in this event. The event features motorcycles ranging from 50-cc to 3000-cc, as well as electric classes. The event has been held annually since 2004 after Speed Week at the end of August prior to Labor Day. Motorcycle drag racing (also known as "sprints") involves two participants lining up at a dragstrip with a signaled starting line. Upon the starting signal, the riders accelerate down a or long, two lane, straight paved track where their elapsed time and terminal speed are recorded. The rider to reach the finish line first is the winner. The best-known form of motorcycle drag racing is the Pro Stock Bike category, although several other categories exist, including Top Fuel and Pro Street. Motorcycles in the Top Fuel category are fueled by nitro methane and can make nearly 1,500 horsepower.
