Valencia City Council Elections
Valencia city council elections have taken place every four years since 1979 to elect the 33 members of the local government for the city of Valencia, Spain. The elections are held using closed list proportional representation in a single electoral district covering the entire city council area. Only parties which receive 5% or more of the total votes cast are eligible for seats which are then allocated on a proportional basis using the D'Hondt method of allocation. The Mayor of Valencia is chosen by the 33 councillors. From 1979 to 1991 the Mayor came from the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). From 1991 the Mayor was Rita Barberá Nolla of the People's Party (PP), the party which held an absolute majority of seats on the city council from the 1995 to 2011 local elections, until 2015. Valencia, Spain
Valencia ( va, València) is the capital of the autonomous community of Valencia and the third-most populated municipality in Spain, with 791,413 inhabitants. It is also the capital of the province of the same name. Popular Alliance (Spain)
The People's Alliance ( es, Alianza Popular, AP) was a post-Francoist electoral coalition, and later a conservative political party in Spain, founded in 1976 as a federation of political associations. Transformed into a party in 1977 and led by Manuel Fraga, it became the main conservative right-wing party in Spain. It was refounded as the People's Party in 1989. Carmen Alborch
Carmen Alborch Bataller (31 October 1947 – 24 October 2018) was a Spanish politician, writer, and minister of culture. Biography and career Alborch gained a doctorate in law with particular specialty in mercantile law. She directed the Valencia Institute of Modern Art (IVAM) between 1988 and 1993. She became politically active with the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in 1992 and served as Minister of Culture from 1993 to 1996 in the last government of Felipe González. She was the recipient of the Gran Cruz de Carlos III and the Gran Cruz del Mérito Civil, and the Progressive Women's Award. In 1996, Alborch was elected to the Congress of Deputies, representing Valencia. Two-party System
A two-party system is a political party system in which two major political parties consistently dominate the political landscape. At any point in time, one of the two parties typically holds a majority in the legislature and is usually referred to as the ''majority'' or ''governing party'' while the other is the ''minority'' or ''opposition party''. Around the world, the term has different meanings. For example, in the United States, the Bahamas, Jamaica, United Kingdom and Zimbabwe, the sense of ''two-party system'' describes an arrangement in which all or nearly all elected officials belong to either of the two major parties, and third parties rarely win any seats in the legislature. José María Chiquillo Barber
José María Chiquillo Barber ( Sumacàrcer, Spain, 24 November 1964) is a Spanish politician who has served as Senator for Valencia province as part of the People's Party (PP) since 2004. Married with two children, Chiquillo worked as a lawyer and worked for Valencia city council from 1988 to 1989. In 1983 he joined Unió Valenciana (Valencian Union UV), a right wing regional party. He was second placed candidate on the party's list for the 1993 Spanish general election in Valencia province. As Unió Valenciana (UV) lost one of their two seats in that election he failed to be elected but, as first substitute for the party, replaced Vicente González Lizondo after the latter's death in 1994. The Valencian Nationalist Bloc ( ca-valencia, Bloc Nacionalista Valencià, Bloc or ''BNV''; ) was a Valencian nationalist party in the Valencian Country, Spain. Clementina Ródenas
Clementina Ródenas Villena (born 11 May 1949) is a Spanish politician from the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) who was Mayor of Valencia between 1989 and 1991. Clementina Ródenas studied the Bachillerato at the Requena Institute and then went on to study Economics and Business Administration at the University of Valencia in 1966 and to obtain a doctorate in Economics in 1978, making her the first woman to obtain a doctorate at that university. Vicente González Lizondo (22 August 1942 in Valencia, Spain – 23 December 1996) was a Spanish politician and co-founder of the regional party Valencian Union (Unió Valenciana.)
