Valdres Folk High School
Valdres () is a traditional district in central, southern Norway, situated between the districts of Gudbrandsdalen and Hallingdal. The region of Valdres consists of the six municipalities of Nord-Aurdal, Sør-Aurdal, Øystre Slidre, Vestre Slidre, Vang and Etnedal. Valdres has about 18,000 inhabitants and is known for its excellent trout fishing and the local dialect. Its main road is E16 and Fylkesveg 51. Valdres is located approximately midway between Oslo and Bergen. The valley is protected to the west and north by the Jotunheimen mountains and the Valdresflye plateau and to the south by the Gol mountain ridge (''Golsfjellet''). The main rivers are Begna and Etna. Historically, Valdres has had an agricultural economy, but tourism has grown in prominence in later years. FIS Cross-Country World Cup
The FIS Cross-Country World Cup is an annual cross-country skiing competition, arranged by the International Ski Federation (FIS) since 1981. The competition was arranged unofficially between 1973 and 1981, although it received provisional recognition on the 31st FIS Congress, 29–30 April 1977 in Bariloche, Argentina. The first World Cup races were held on 9 January 1982 and were located in Reit im Winkl, West Germany and Klingenthal, East Germany. Bill Koch of the United States and Berit Aunli of Norway were the overall winners in the first season. Rules Competitors attempt to achieve the most points during the season. They compete in two disciplines: Distance and Sprint. Current Distance races are mostly 10 km, 20 km, Skiathlon and 50 km for the men and women. Beitostølen
Beitostølen is a village in Øystre Slidre Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. The village is located at an elevation of about above mean sea level on the southern edge of the Valdresflye mountain plateau. The villages of Skammestein and Hegge lie about to the southeast of Beitostølen. The lake Øyangen lies a short distance to the southwest of the village. The Norwegian County Road 51 runs through the village. The village has a population (2021) of 358 and a population density of . Sports Beitostølen is largely a tourist area, with many holiday cabins and hotels serving various winter sports facilities. Etna (river)
Etna or Etne is a river in the Valdres region of Innlandet county, Norway. The long river flows through the municipalities of Øystre Slidre, Nord-Aurdal, Etnedal, and Nordre Land before joining the river Dokka at the village of Dokka in Nordre Land Municipality. Soon after the confluence of those two rivers, they join the Randsfjorden (a long, narrow inland lake). The river begins near the mountains Skaget and Langsua inside the Langsua National Park. It then flows in a southerly direction. Much of the river runs through the Etnedalen valley (the namesake of the municipality of Etnedal). The river runs through the village of Bruflat and then shortly after this, it begins heading in a more easterly direction. Begna (river)
The Begna is a river in Viken and Innlandet counties in Norway. The long river runs from the Filefjell mountain area through Valdres to the town of Hønefoss where it joins the river Randselva before it empties into the Tyrifjorden. The river Begna drains a watershed of and this is the primary river in the watershed. Along its course, the river passes through the village of Begna in Sør-Aurdal Municipality. The Norwegian writer, Mikkjel Fønhus lived much of his life and located most of his novels along the river Begna. Course The headwaters of the river is found in the Filefjell mountain plateau on the south side of the Jotunheimen mountains. Among the highest points of the headwaters are the lake Steinurdalstjern which sits at an elevation of above sea level. Gol, Norway
is a municipality in Buskerud in Viken county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Hallingdal. The administrative center of the municipality is the village of Gol which is also the population center. Gol was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The area of Hemsedal was separated from Gol in 1897 to become a separate municipality. Valdresflye
Valdresflye, also spelled Valdresflya and Valdresflyi, is a mountain plateau in the easternmost part of the Jotunheimen mountains in Norway. The plateau lies in Innlandet county, mostly in Øystre Slidre Municipality, but a small area extends into Vang Municipality as well. The Norwegian County Road 51 runs over the plateau, reaching above mean sea level, but this road is only open in the summers. The plateau is surrounded by several mountains including Gråhøi to the east, Heimdalshøe to the northeast, Tjønnholstinden to the northwest, and Rasletinden to the west. The lakes Bygdin and Vinstre lie along the south side of the plateau. Name The plateaus is named ''Valdresflye''. The first element is the name of the district Valdres in which it is located. Jotunheimen
Jotunheimen (; "the home of the Jötunn") is a mountainous area of roughly in southern Norway and is part of the long range known as the Scandinavian Mountains. The 29 highest mountains in Norway are all located in the Jotunheimen mountains, including the tall mountain Galdhøpiggen (the highest point in Norway). The Jotunheimen mountains straddle the border between Innlandet and Vestland counties (historically part of the old Oppland and Sogn og Fjordane counties). Tourism Jotunheimen is very popular with hikers and climbers, and the Norwegian Mountain Touring Association maintains a number of mountain lodges in the area, as well as marked trails that run between the lodges and others that run up to some of the peaks.
