Valapattanam
Valapattanam is a census town in the Kannur district, located in the Indian state of Kerala. It is also the smallest panchayat in Kerala. Its area is 2.04 sqr Km. It is about 7 km north of Kannur. Valapattanam is known for its communal harmony. On one side Kalarivathukkal Temple is located and on the other bank there is "Kakkulangara Mosque". Etymology This town is also known as Balyapattanam. This town is situated on the banks of the Valapattanam river. Centuries back Valapattanam River (വളപട്ടണം പുഴ ) was the main ship route for trading and Valapattanam was the main town, because of this the town got this referred as "Valya pattanam" which means "big town" in Malayalam language. Kalarivathukkal Temple
Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathy Temple, ''Bhadrakali Shrine'' located near Valapattanam river, is the family shrine of ''Chirakkal Royal Family''. The deity of the shrine is the fierce form of ''Bhadrakali''. ''Kalarivathukkal Bhagavathy'' is considered as the mother of the ancient martial art ''Kalarippayattu'' and hence the name. The shrine is administered by ''Malabar Devaswom Board'' and classified as ''Category A'' Temple of the board. Kalarivathukkal has come from the word Kalari Vaatilkal. Legend The ''holy shrine'' is one of the ''Devi temple'' triads of the erstwhile Chirakkal Kingdom. The other two being ''Cherukunnu Annapoornashwari Temple'' and ''Tiruvarkadu Bhagavathy Temple''(''Madayi kavu''). Muthappan Temple
Parassinikadavu Muthappan temple is a temple, located at Parassinikadavu in Anthoor Municipality on the banks of the Valapattanam river about from Taliparamba and from Kannur City in Kannur District, Kerala, India. Thiyya community urayima Principal deity of the temple is '' Sree Muthappan'', whose divinity is presented as a ritualistic theyyam enactment in two versions called ''Thiruvappan'' and ''Vellattam''. Ezhimala
Ezhimala, a hill reaching a height of , is located near Payyanur, in Kannur district of Kerala, south India. It is a part of a conspicuous and isolated cluster of hills, forming a promontory, north of Kannur (Cannanore). The Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala is the Asia's largest, and the world's third-largest, naval academy. As the former capital of the ancient Kolathunadu Kingdom of the Mushikas, Ezhimala is considered to be an important historical site. A flourishing seaport and center of trade around the beginning of the Common Era, it was also one of the major battlefields of the Chola- Chera Wars, in the 11th century. Duarte Barbosa
Duarte Barbosa (c. 14801 May 1521) was a Portuguese writer and officer from Portuguese India (between 1500 and 1516). He was a Christian pastor and scrivener in a ''feitoria'' in Kochi, and an interpreter of the local language, Malayalam. Barbosa wrote the ''Book of Duarte Barbosa'' ( pt, Livro de Duarte Barbosa) c. 1516, making it one of the earliest examples of Portuguese travel literature. In 1519, Barbosa embarked on the first expedition to circumnavigate the world, led by his brother-in-law Ferdinand Magellan. Barbosa was killed in 1521, at a banquet held by Rajah Humabon in the Philippines, a few days after the Battle of Mactan on Cebu Island. Early life Barbosa's father was Diogo Barbosa.
