Vagabond (1985 Film)
''Vagabond'' (french: Sans toit ni loi, "with neither shelter nor law") is a 1985 French drama film directed by Agnès Varda, featuring Sandrine Bonnaire. It tells the story of a young woman, a vagabond, who wanders through the Languedoc-Roussillon wine country one winter. The film premiered at the 42nd Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Lion. ''Vagabond'' was nominated for four César Awards, with Bonnaire winning Best Actress. The film was the 36th highest-grossing film of the year with a total of 1,080,143 admissions in France. Plot The film begins with the contorted body of a young woman lying in a ditch, covered in frost. Agnès Varda
Agnès Varda (; born Arlette Varda; 30 May 1928 – 29 March 2019) was a Belgian-born French film director, screenwriter, photographer, and artist. Her pioneering work was central to the development of the widely influential French New Wave film movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Her films focused on achieving documentary realism, addressing women's issues, and other social commentary, with a distinctive experimental style. Varda's work employed location shooting in an era when the limitations of sound technology made it easier and more common to film indoors, with constructed sets and painted backdrops of landscapes, rather than outdoors, on location. A pseudo-documentary or fake documentary is a film or video production that takes the form or style of a documentary film but does not portray real events. Rather, scripted and fictional elements are used to tell the story. The pseudo-documentary, unlike the related mockumentary, is not always intended as satire or humor. It may use documentary camera techniques but with fabricated sets, actors, or situations, and it may use digital effects to alter the filmed scene or even create a wholly synthetic scene. Film Orson Welles gained notoriety with his radio show and hoax ''War of the Worlds'' which fooled listeners into thinking the Earth was being invaded by Martians. ''Dust'' is a 1985 film directed by Marion Hänsel based on the 1977 J. M. Coetzee novel ''In the Heart of the Country''. The film was shot in Spain and is a French-Belgian production. The film was selected as the Belgian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 58th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. It won the Silver Lion prize, awarded to the best first or second major work by a director, at the 1985 Venice Film Festival. The jury recognised Jane Birkin's performance as amongst the best of the year, but decided not to award a best actress prize because all of the actresses they judged to have made the best performances were in films that won major awards. Jane Mallory Birkin, Order of British Empire, OBE (born 14 December 1946) is an English-French singer and actress. The Volpi Cup for Best Actress is an award presented by the Venice Film Festival. It is given by the festival jury in honor of an actress who has delivered an outstanding performance from the films in the competition slate. It is named in honor of Count Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata, the founder of the festival. The 1st ceremony was held in 1932, when Helen Hayes received the Volpi Cup for the title role in ''The Sin of Madelon Claudet'' (1931)—this was the only time that the award was chosen by public voting.
