Vadims Vasiļevskis
Vadims Vasiļevskis (born 5 January 1982) is a retired Latvian track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. He won silver at the 2004 Summer Olympics. His personal best throw of 90.73 m, set in 2007, is the Latvian record. In 2008, Vasiļevskis was awarded the Latvian Order of the Three Stars for his achievements in athletics. Career He has been coached by Valentīna Eiduka. In his early career he finished eighth at the 2000 World Junior Championships and competed at the 2002 European Championships without reaching the final. Vasiļevskis was the Latvian flag bearer at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He was the biggest surprise among Latvia's medal winners in 2004 Olympics. Latvia had three competitors in javelin throw: Vasiļevskis, Ēriks Rags and Voldemārs Lūsis, with Vasiļevskis being the youngest and the least known of the three. 2004 IAAF World Athletics Final
The 2nd IAAF World Athletics Final was held at the Stade Louis II, in Monte Carlo, Monaco on September 18, and September 19, 2004. The hammer throw event for men and women had to take place in Szombathely, Hungary a week previous as the Monaco stadium was not large enough to hold the event. One of the main highlights was the men's 3000 metres steeplechase. This was won by Saif Saeed Shaheen of Qatar, (formerly Stephen Cherono of Kenya), who won in a championship record of 7:56.94 despite the fact that the field had been held up by Wesley Kiprotich clattering into the first barrier. Shaheen had been unable to compete in the recent 2004 Summer Olympics due to his change of nationality but had set the world record of 7:53.63 minutes in Brussels just ten days after the Olympic final. Voldemārs Lūsis (born 7 December 1974 in Riga) is a former Latvian athlete, who competed in the javelin throw. He is the son of Jānis Lūsis (1939-2020) and Elvīra Ozoliņa. Lūsis finished in eleventh place in 2001 World Championships. He competed at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics without reaching the final. Latvia competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004. This was the nation's eighth appearance at the Summer Olympics. The Latvian Olympic Committee sent the nation's smallest delegation to the Games since the breakup of the Soviet Union. A total of 32 athletes, 22 men and 10 women, competed only in 11 sports. Fourteen athletes had previously competed in Sydney, including silver medalist Aigars Fadejevs in men's race walk, defending Olympic champion Igors Vihrovs in men's floor exercises, and judoka and bronze medalist Vsevolods Zeļonijs.
