Vons is a Southern California and Southern Nevada supermarket chain owned by Albertsons. It is headquartered in Fullerton, California, and operates stores under the Vons and Pavilions banners. It was owned by Safeway Inc. and headquartered in Arcadia, California, before that company was acquired by and folded into Albertsons along with all of their subsidiaries, including Vons. History Beginning Charles Von der Ahe opened a 20-foot wide store named Von's Groceteria in downtown Los Angeles, California, in 1906. The business had grown to 87 stores by 1928, when he sold the operation to MacMarr Stores. MacMarr was acquired by M.B. Skaggs' Safeway in 1930. In 1932, his sons Theodore and Wilfred Von der Ahe restarted the Von's Grocery Company. Wilfred Von Der Ahe
Wilfred Luer Von der Ahe (May 9, 1910 – November 20, 1998) was a German American entrepreneur, best known as the co-founder of the Vons supermarket chain in Southern California. Personal life and family Von der Ahe's parents were Charles T. Von der Ahe (1883–1973) and Linda Luer (1887–1973). He was one of eight children, with five boys and three girls: Theodore, Wilfred, Karl, Walter, Virginia, Clyde, Muriel, and Dorothy. Von der Ahe was married to Mary Jane Von der Ahe (1911–2006, née Smith) in 1934, and they remained married for 64 years until his death. They had four children and 18 grandchildren. Charles Theodore Von der Ahe (August 29, 1882 – June 4, 1973) was a Danish-American businessman, best known as an early innovator in the grocery business in Southern California, and founder of Vons supermarket chain in Southern California along with his two sons, Wilfred and Theodore. Personal life and family Von der Ahe's parents were Charles Rudolph Peter Von der Ahe (1858–1918) and Caroline Sophie Larsen (1858–1917). Von der Ahe's family moved from Denmark to the United States in 1889, and they eventually settled in Illinois. Even though Charles was born in Denmark, the Von der Ahe family was of German extraction, having moved to Denmark one or two generations earlier. Von der Ahe was married to Linda Augusta Luer (1887 – 1973, née Linda Luer) in 1907. Pavilions (supermarket)
Pavilions is a grocery store banner used by Vons, a supermarket division of Albertsons in Southern California. Although similar to Vons stores, Pavilions markets are more upscale and feature a larger selection of organic food, wine, and other specialty foods. Introduced by Vons in 1985, they were the showpiece of their new image. The stores also tend to be larger than the typical Vons store, because many of them contain full-service pharmacies, expanded service areas and specialty offerings as a standard feature. The first location was opened in Garden Grove in October 1985 in a 55,000-square-foot former Zody's discount department store building. Fazio's Shopping Bag
Fazio's Shopping Bag—also known as Shopping Bag Food Stores—was a supermarket chain located in Southern California. History Shopping Bag Food Stores began in 1930 as a single grocery store on Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles. In 1933, they opened their first supermarket, and in 1954 the company went public. In January 1960, Shopping Bag —with 38 stores at that time— and Vons —with 28 stores— announced their merger, making it the second largest supermarket chain on the West Coast. The merger was challenged by the Federal Trade Commission, and after two lower court victories for Vons, in 1966 the Supreme Court of the United States reversed the decisions and ordered the divestiture. Fisher Foods, later known as Fazio's, was an American supermarket chain based in Cleveland. History Beginning Fisher Foods, Cleveland’s largest supermarket chain for its 80-year history, was founded in 1907 as Fisher Brothers Company. The Fisher Brothers, Manning and Charles, were natives of Jersey City, New Jersey. They started in the grocery business in New York City at the end of the 19th century, when Manning worked for James Butler, a grocer who owned 150 stores in the city. The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is the highest court in the federal judiciary of the United States.
