VMSB-342
Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 342 (VMSB-342) was a dive bomber squadron in the United States Marine Corps. The squadron, also known as the “Bats from Hell”, was active during World War II but never saw combat in the Pacific Theater. The squadron were decommissioned on October 10, 1944. History Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 342 was commissioned on July 1, 1943, at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina. During November 1943, the squadron moved up to Marine Corps Auxiliary Airfield Atlantic and was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 33. Some of the squadron's pilots departed for follow on training at Boca Chica Key, Florida, the site of what today is Naval Air Station Key West. In August 1944, the squadron with its twenty SBD dive bombers again transferred, this time to Marine Corps Air Station Newport, Arkansas where it joined Marine Aircraft Group 94. Fixed-wing aircraft squadrons (heavier than air) are denoted by the letter "V," which comes from the French verb "Voler" (to fly). Helicopter, Rotary wing (helicopter) squadrons use "H." Marine squadrons are always noted by the second letter "M." Squadron numbering is not linear as some were numbered in ascending order and others took numbers from the wing or the ship to which they were assigned. United States Marine Corps Aviation (USMCA) is the aircraft arm of the United States Marine Corps. Marine Aviation and Training Support Group 33 (MATSG-33) is a United States Marine Corps aviation training group that was originally established during World War II as Marine Aircraft Group 33 (MAG-33). Fighter squadrons from MAG-33 fought most notably during the Battle of Okinawa and also as the first Marine aviation units to support the Korean War when they arrived as part of the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade. Air interdiction (AI), also known as deep air support (DAS), is the use of preventive tactical bombing and strafing by combat aircraft against enemy targets that are not an immediate threat, to delay, disrupt or hinder later enemy engagement of friendly forces.
