VG Kulkarni
Virupax Ganesh “VG” Kulkarni (1937–2014), was a Hong Kong-based journalist and Regional Editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review. Early years Kulkarni was born in India in 1937 to a noted Brahmin family and served in the Indian Army, rising to major before being sent to serve in Hong Kong at the Indian consulate there. Kulkarni pursued Chinese studies in Hong Kong, meeting fellow student American Suzanne Pepper there in the 1960s. After marrying, he left Hong Kong with Pepper for New York where he was employed by United Press International after graduating in Journalism at Columbia University's School of Journalism. The Kulkarnis returned to Hong Kong in 1973. Career in Hong Kong Kulkarni began his Hong Kong career at the Hong Kong Standard newspaper. He later joined the Manila-based Press Foundation of Asia. The ''Far Eastern Economic Review'' (''FEER'') was an Asian business magazine published between 1946 and December 2009 in the English language. Based in Hong Kong, the news magazine published weekly until December 2004, when it converted to a monthly publication because of financial difficulties. After ''FEER'' became a monthly, most articles were contributed by non-staff specialists, including economists, business-community figures, government policymakers and social scientists. ''FEER'' covered a variety of topics including politics, business, economics, technology, and social and cultural issues throughout Asia, focusing on Southeast Asia and Greater China. Suzanne Pepper
Suzanne Pepper (1939 – 29 June 2022) was a Hong Kong-based American author, political scientist, and former editor from 1995 to 1996 of the Chinese University of Hong Kong's ''China Review''. Biography Pepper left the United States for Hong Kong in the 1960s to take up Chinese language studies. There she met fellow languages student VG Kulkarni, an Indian army officer posted to India's consulate in Hong Kong. After several years in New York where they married in 1970, they returned to Hong Kong in 1973. Pepper gained a PhD in political science from University of California at Berkeley in 1972. She authored a number of political science works focusing on China in general, and Hong Kong in particular. She was also a founding contributor to ''Hong Kong Free Press''.
