Vágar Municipality (Vága kommuna) is a municipality in the Faroese Islands. It covers the eastern part of the island of Vágar (while Sørvágur Municipality covers the western part of the island). Sandavágur
Sandavágur ( da, Sandevåg) is a city on the south coast of the Faroese island of Vágar. The name ''Sandavágur'' means ''sandy bay'' and refers to the sandy beach which used to be much larger than present. From one point in Sandavágur you can get a view of all the southern islands in the Faroes. Sandavágur used to be a municipality until 1 January 2009, when it fused together with the neighbour village Miðvágur into the new Vágar municipality. Data: History The town has an ancient history. A 13th century runestone, discovered in 1917, bears an inscription stating that the Norwegian Viking ''Torkil Onundarson'' from Rogaland was the first settler in this area. The stone can be seen in Sandavágur Church. Excavations in the town have also uncovered ruins from the Middle Ages. The Faroe Islands ( ), or simply the Faroes ( fo, Føroyar ; da, Færøerne ), are a North Atlantic archipelago, island group and an autonomous territory of the Danish Realm, Kingdom of Denmark. They are located north-northwest of Scotland, and about halfway between Norway ( away) and Iceland ( away). The islands form part of the Kingdom of Denmark, along with mainland Denmark and Greenland. Vágar
Vágar ( da, Vågø) is one of the 18 islands in the archipelago of the Faroe Islands and the most westerly of the ''large islands''. With a size of , it ranks number three, behind Streymoy and Eysturoy. Vágar region also comprises the island of Mykines. The Vágar island shape is very distinctive, since on maps it resembles a dog's head. The fjord Sørvágsfjørður is the mouth and the lake Fjallavatn is the eye. History Vágar is the first port of call for most foreigners travelling to the Faroe Islands, as it is home to the islands’ only airport, Vágar Airport. An airfield was built there during World War II by the British, who occupied the Faroe Islands with the islanders' consent. Sørvágur Municipality
Sørvágur Municipality ( fo, Sørvágs kommuna), is the westernmost municipality in the Faroe Islands. It consists of the villages of Sørvágur :''There is also a town called Vágur on Suðuroy.'' Sørvágur ( da, Sørvåg) is a village on the island of Vágar in the Faroe Islands. It is located at the landward end of Sørvágsfjørður. Sørvágur is the largest village in Sørvágur ..., Bøur, Gásadalur and Mykines. Originally the municipality only included the village of Sørvágur, but in January 2005 the municipality of Sørvágur agreed to merge with the smaller municipalities of Bøur/Gásadal and Mykines. Miðvágur
Miðvágur ( da, Midvåg), is a village in the Faroe Islands on Vágar. It has been a municipality until 1 January 2009 when it fused with Sandavágur into Vága kommuna. Located on the south coast of the island of Vágar, Miðvágur is the largest town on this Faroese island. For years, Miðvágur has been known as a good location for whaling and traditionally, bells would ring with the cry "''Grindaboð''!" - "Pilot whale ahoy!" History Miðvágur has been inhabited since at least the Viking period—as excavations have demonstrated. Since these early times, there has been a local "Thingstätte" (local community council), or " Várting". The most interesting building of the village is ''Kálvalíð'', a house which was probably built at the end of the Middle Ages. It is the oldest building of the village and possibly of the whole Faroe Islands. Kálvalíð consists of two rooms with a turf roof, built in the traditional faroese style. Today it houses a museum. Vatnsoyrar
Vatnsoyrar ( da, Vandsøre) is a village founded in 1921 in the middle of the Faroese island of Vagar. Vatnsoyrar, being created in 1921, is one of the youngest settlements in the Faroes. It is the only village in the archipelago that is not on the coast, but instead it is next to Sørvagsvatn, the largest lake on the Faroe Islands. Sørvagsvatn was used by the British Army as a natural airfield for seaplanes during the English occupation of the Faroes in the Second World War, while Vagar's airport was built immediately to the west of the lake. There is a small motor museum (Vatnsoyra Bilasavn) in Vatnsoyrar with, among other things, a 1915 Model T Ford and a 1922 Ford Model TT truck, the first types of car to be used on the Faroe Islands. Beyond that there is a factory for doors and windows (Vatnsoyra Snikkaravirki). There is a popular camp school for young people in Vatnsoyrar. Municipalities Of The Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands are administratively divided in 29 municipalities (''kommunur''), with about 120 cities and villages. Until December 31, 2008, there were 34 municipalities, and until December 31, 2004, there were 48 municipalities. In the coming years the number of Faroese municipalities is expected to drop to somewhere between 7 and 15, as there is currently a rationale towards municipal amalgamation and a decentralization of public services. In 1998 it was suggested that no municipality should have fewer than 2,000 inhabitants, but whether this will be true is a political question. The Faroese government has furthermore decided not to conduct forced, top-down amalgamation, but to leave the process to the free will of the municipalities.
