Volunteering Matters
Volunteering Matters is a UK charity focused on "''the advancement of citizenship and community development for the public benefit through the promotion of volunteering''". It was founded in 1962 as Community Service Volunteers (CSV) by Mora and Alec Dickson. In the 2018/2019 financial year, Volunteering Matters engaged around 20,000 volunteers through its hundreds of voluntary projects across England, Scotland and Wales. As of 2021, the president of Volunteering Matters is Lord Freud. He succeeded Lord Levy, who had been President from 1999, in 2019. The charity is led by a Trustee Board headed by Anne Heal. Alec Dickson
Dr Alexander Graeme Dickson CBE (23 May 1914 – 23 September 1994) was the founder of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). Dickson graduated from Oxford University in 1935 and worked as a foreign correspondent in Central Europe during the rise of Hitler. He also helped groups of young people in the slums of Leeds and London. The Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia resulted in Dickson working in refugee relief. Reportedly, his name was number 57 on a list of those to be arrested by the Gestapo. After the war, Dickson spent 15 years in Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia, training indigenous young people as community leaders and ''animateurs''. In 1951, Dickson married writer, artist and campaigner Mora Dickson (née Robertson) (20 April 1918 – 17 December 2001), author of ''A Chance To Serve'' (1976) recounting the beginnings of VSO. David Anthony Freud, Baron Freud, (born 24 June 1950) is a British politician, life peer, and former investment banker who served as Minister for Welfare Reform from 2010 to 2016. Before he joined the Conservative Party, he was vice-chairman of investment banking at UBS and a government adviser on welfare reform. Early life and career Freud is the son of Walter Freud and a great-grandson of the physician and pioneering psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud.
