Volume One (Sleep Album)
''Volume One'' is the debut album by the American band Sleep. Not long after Sleep's formation, the band went to Razor's Edge studios to start recording. It was the only album recorded with original guitarist Justin Marler, before he would depart from the band in fall 1991 to become an Orthodox monk. ''Volume One'' showcases a darker sound and stronger doom metal influence than Sleep's later work. The image featured on the cover is taken from the Salvador Dalí painting "Soft Self-Portrait with Fried Bacon". "The Suffering", "Anguish" and "Scourge" are all re-recordings from the band's days as Asbestosdeath. Volume One would be released sometime in 1991 on CD, Vinyl and Cassette. "Scourge" would be omitted from the cassette and vinyl versions of the album. The vinyl edition of the album would remain out-of-print for years until it was reissued in 2014. Sleep (band)
Sleep is an American heavy metal band from San Jose, California. Guitarist Matt Pike and bassist and vocalist Al Cisneros have been the only constant members throughout its history, with several changes of drummers throughout their history. Critic Eduardo Rivadavia describes them as "perhaps the ultimate stoner rock band" and notes they exerted a strong influence on metal in the 1990s. The band first gained attention with their second album, '' Sleep's Holy Mountain'' (1992). However, conflict with the band's record company contributed to Sleep's breakup by the end of the decade. Sleep's third album, ''Dopesmoker'', was released after the band's dissolution. The band reformed in 2009 and has played sporadic live dates internationally since. Chris Hakius
Chris Hakius is an American retired rock drummer best known for his work in Om and Sleep. Around 1990, Hakius was in Asbestosdeath along with Al Cisneros and Matt Pike. Asbestosdeath broke up and the three would form Sleep. Hakius was Sleep's drummer from 1990 to its split in 1998. After Sleep's break up, he played drums in The Sabians with former Sleep member Justin Marler. They recorded two albums in 2002 and 2003. Hakius played drums in Om from its beginning in 2003 until his departure on January 31, 2009. His final live performances were with Sleep in 2009 at the ATP reunion show. He has since retired from music to raise a family. In 2014 he was arrested by California police, for processing and growing marijuana. Electric Guitar
An electric guitar is a guitar that requires external amplification in order to be heard at typical performance volumes, unlike a standard acoustic guitar (however combinations of the two - a semi-acoustic guitar and an electric acoustic guitar exist). It uses one or more pickups to convert the vibration of its strings into electrical signals, which ultimately are reproduced as sound by loudspeakers. Bass Guitar
The bass guitar, electric bass or simply bass (), is the lowest-pitched member of the string family. It is a plucked string instrument similar in appearance and construction to an electric or an acoustic guitar, but with a longer neck and scale length, and typically four to six strings or courses. Al Cisneros
Al Cisneros (born September 23, 1973) is an American musician. He is the lead singer and bassist for stoner rock/ doom metal bands Sleep and Om. He also was a member of Shrinebuilder and Asbestosdeath (the precursor to Sleep) and has put out nine releases as a solo artist. Music career Cisneros' earliest musical interests included an appreciation of Black Sabbath, in particular their first four albums. In 1989 he formed the sludge metal band Asbestosdeath, taking up bass and vocal duties, with Chris Hakius on drums and Matt Pike and Tom Choi on guitar. Asbestosdeath released two EPs in 1990. Sleep Following Choi's departure, Cisneros, Hakius and Pike recruited Justin Marler on guitar and renamed themselves Sleep. Justin Marler
Justin Marler (born July 29, 1972) is an American musician. He is known for being a founding member of the stoner rock band Sleep and for leaving a burgeoning career in music to become a monk in an Eastern Orthodox monastery. In 1990, Marler joined the members of a little-known band called Asbestosdeath (with Al Cisneros, Chris Hakius and Matt Pike), which the members later renamed Sleep. Soon after recording Sleep's first full-length record, ''Volume One'', Marler vanished, while the band went on to become metal icons. Marler turned up at Saint Herman of Alaska Monastery in northern California and was later transferred to a monastery on a nearly-deserted island in Alaska. During his seven-year stint as a monk, he founded the widely distributed zine titled ''Death to the World''.
