Volleyball At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's Tournament
The women's tournament in volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics was held at Capital Indoor Stadium and Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium from 9 to 23 August 2008. The twelve competing teams were split equally into two pools of six teams. Each team played all other teams in their pool with the winning team gaining 2 points and the losing side 1 point. The top four teams from each pool progressed through to the quarterfinals. The rest of the tournament was a single-elimination bracket, with a bronze medal match held between the two semifinal losers. A total of 38 matches were played: 15 in each group, 4 quarterfinals, 2 semifinals, 1 bronze medal match, and 1 gold medal match. Capital Indoor Stadium
The Capital Indoor Stadium () is an indoor arena in 56 Zhongguancun South Street, Beijing, China that was built in 1968. It hosted matches between national table tennis teams of China and the United States in 1971; these matches were part of the exchange program known as ''ping pong diplomacy''. Fabiana Marcelino Claudino (born 24 January 1985) is a Brazilian volleyball player who made her debut for the Brazilian national team against Croatia. She captained Brazil to the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics. Personal life Claudino was born on 24 January 1985 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Ekaterina Gamova
Yekaterina Aleksandrovna Gamova (russian: Екатерина Александровна Гамова; born 17 October 1980) is a retired Russian volleyball player. She was a member of the Russian national team that won the gold medals at the 2006 and 2010 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championships, and the silver medal in both the Athens 2004 and Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Due to her stature and dominance at the net, she has been hailed as the "Queen of Volleyball". She is tall with EU size 49 feet, making her one of the tallest female athletes in the world. Erika Araki
is a retired Japanese volleyball player. She served as captain for the national team from 2009 to 2012. She competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics winning a bronze medal, and 2020 Summer Olympics, in Women's volleyball which she was the captain. Tayyiba Haneef-Park
Tayyiba Mumtaz Haneef-Park (born March 23, 1979) is a retired American indoor volleyball player. She played at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, where the team finished in 5th place. Haneef-Park also competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she won a silver medal with team USA. Yumilka Daysi Ruíz Luaces (born 8 May 1978 in Camagüey) is a retired volleyball player from Cuba, who represented her native country in four consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1996. She twice won a gold medal with the national team in 1996 and 2000; she also claimed the bronze at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Sheilla Castro de Paula Blassioli (born 1 July 1983 in Belo Horizonte) is a former volleyball player from Brazil, who represented her native country at the 2008 Summer Olympics and in the 2012 Summer Olympics. On both occasions the Brazilian national team won the gold medal. She also played the 2016 Summer Olympics, when Brazil placed fifth. She retired on April 9th 2022.
