Volleyball At The 1996 Summer Olympics – Women's Tournament
The 1996 women's Olympic volleyball tournament was the ninth edition of the event, organised by the world's governing body, the FIVB in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee. It was held from 20 July to 3 August 1996 at the Stegeman Coliseum of The University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia and at the Omni Coliseum in Atlanta, Georgia. Qualification Format The tournament was played in two different stages. In the (first stage), the twelve participants were divided into two pools of six teams. A single round-robin format was played within each pool to determine the teams position in the pool. The four highest ranked teams in each pool advanced to the (second stage) and the two lowest ranked teams took no further participation (with pool places 5th and 6th being ranked in the final standings as joined 9th ad 11th, respectively). Stegeman Coliseum
Stegeman Coliseum is a 10,523-seat multi-purpose arena in Athens, Georgia, United States. The arena opened in 1964 in honor of C. Sal Stegeman. It is home to the University of Georgia Bulldogs basketball and gymnastics teams. It was also the venue of the rhythmic gymnastics and preliminary indoor volleyball matches during the 1996 Summer Olympics, as well as the 1989, 1995, and 2008 NCAA gymnastics championships. As a multi-purpose facility, the Coliseum also hosted a variety of other kinds of events, including many large indoor rock concerts during its early history, as well as the university's Graduate School commencement exercises. Eugenio George Lafita (March 29, 1933 – June 1, 2014) was a Cuban volleyball coach. Nicknamed "Volleyball guru", Lafita led the Cuban women's team to three straight gold medals in the Olympic Games, 1992, 1996 and 2000. Mirka Francia
Mirka Francia Vasconcelos (born 14 February 1975, in Villa Clara) is a Cuban-Italian volleyball player who has won two Olympic gold medals with the Cuba women's national volleyball team. At 1.84 meters (6 ft) tall, she played as a blocker before becoming a hitter in 2004. Life and career Born in Santa Clara, Cuba, Francia first played volleyball at age ten and joined the junior national team in Havana four years later. Magalys Carvajal Rivera (born December 18, 1968) is a Cuban Volleyball Player, World champion and Olympic champion. She led Cuba to Olympic Gold Medals in the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Games. She also helped Cuba to win the World Gold Medal in 1994. She has been called the greatest middle blocker to ever play the sport of women's volleyball, standing at 6' 3" tall. Taismary Agüero Leiva (born March 5, 1977) is a Cuban-born Italian volleyball player. Regla Torres Herrera (born February 12, 1975 in Havana) is a Cuban volleyball player who has won three Olympic gold medals with her first being at the young, for volleyball, age of 17. She has played on the international circuit since she was 14.
