Vogelwaarde
Vogelwaarde is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Hulst, and lies about 29 km southwest of Bergen op Zoom. History The village was first mention in 1936 as Vogelwaarde, and is a combination of "land on water" and the stream Vogel. The village was formed in 1970 from the former villages Boschkapelle and Stoppeldijk. Both villages were located in the Stoppeldijkpolder. In 1645, the Boschkapelle, a chapel, was built which became a site of pilgrimage for the Martyrs of Gorkum in 1761. The St Gerulphus is a three-aisled church with needle spire which was constructed between 1860 and 1861. The church burnt down in 1869, and was rebuilt and enlarged the next year. The St Paul and Peter Church was built between 1875 and 1876, and used to be located in Boschkapelle. In 1936, the villages of Stoppeldijk and Boschkapelle formed the municipality of Vogelwaarde. Hulst was captured from the Spanish in 1591 by Maurice of Orange but was recaptured by Archduke Albert in 1596. In 1640, the Dutch forces tried to conquer the city, but they were defeated in battle by the Spanish Army, and Frederick Henry was forced to retreat. In 1645, the Siege of Hulst (to control the left bank of the Schelde river) occurred. It was led by Prince of Orange Frederick Henry, during the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) with Spain. A further siege took place in 1702, where General Menno van Coehoorn defended the town successfully for the Dutch and in 1747 when it was taken by the French after incompetent defence by Lt. Bergen op Zoom (; called ''Berrege'' in the local dialect) is a municipality and a city located in the south of the Netherlands. Etymology The city was built on a place where two types of soil meet: sandy soil and marine clay. The sandy soil pushed against the marine clay, accumulating and forming hills over several centuries. People called those hills the ''Brabantse Wal'', literally meaning "ramparts of Brabant". ''Zoom'' refers to the border of these ramparts and ''bergen'' in Dutch means mountains or hills.
