Viscount Stuart of Findhorn, of Findhorn in the County of Moray, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 20 November 1959 for the Conservative politician the Hon. James Stuart after his retirement from the House of Commons. Stuart was the third son of Morton Gray Stuart, 17th Earl of Moray (see Earl of Moray for earlier history of the family). the title is held by his grandson, the third Viscount, who succeeded his father in 1999. Findhorn
Findhorn ( gd, Inbhir Èir or ''Inbhir Èireann'') is a village in Moray, Scotland. It is located on the eastern shore of Findhorn Bay and immediately south of the Moray Firth. Findhorn is 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Kinloss, and about 5 miles (9 km) by road from Forres. The Findhorn Foundation lies to the south of Findhorn Village but is considered separate from it. History Original settlement The existing settlement is the second village to bear this name, the original having been a mile to the northwest of the present position and inundated by the sea. This transposition was not an overnight catastrophe but a gradual withdrawal from the earlier site during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. James Stuart, 1st Viscount Stuart Of Findhorn
James Gray Stuart, 1st Viscount Stuart of Findhorn, (9 February 1897 – 20 February 1971) was a British Unionist politician. He was joint-Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury in Winston Churchill's war-time coalition government and later served as Secretary of State for Scotland under Churchill and then Sir Anthony Eden from 1951 to 1957. In 1959 he was elevated to the peerage as Viscount Stuart of Findhorn. Background Born in Edinburgh, Stuart was the third and youngest son of Morton Stuart, 17th Earl of Moray, and Edith Douglas Palmer, daughter of Rear-Admiral George Palmer. Military service Stuart was commissioned from the Officers Training Corps into the Royal Scots (Special Reserve) as a 2nd Lieutenant (his probation completed in Jan 1915) and served in the First World War, reaching the rank of Captain. The title Earl of Moray, Mormaer of Moray or King of Moray was originally held by the rulers of the Province of Moray, which existed from the 10th century with varying degrees of independence from the Kingdom of Alba to the south. Until 1130 the status of Moray's rulers was ambiguous and they were described in some sources as "''mormaers''" (the Gaelic term for "Earl"), in others as "Kings of Moray", and in others as " Kings of Alba".
