Virudhachalam Junction Railway Station
Vriddhachalam Junction railway station is located in Cuddalore district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and serves Virudhachalam. History The South Indian Railway Company laid a -long metre-gauge trunk line from Chennai to Tuticorin in 1880. With the conversion from metre gauge to broad gauge in the entire Egmore–Tambaram–Villupuram–Tiruchirapalli–Dindigul–Madurai sector virtually complete broad-gauge passenger traffic was initiated in March 2001. Electrification The broad-gauge Chord Line, Tamil Nadu, Viluppuram–Tiruchirapalli sector was electrified in 2010. Despite the fact that most trains bound to South Tamil Nadu stop at this station, this station is only a 'B' grade station. Cuddalore District is one of the 38 districts in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. History Since ancient times, the old town has been a seaport. Virudhachalam or Vriddhachalam is a Town and taluk headquarters in Cuddalore district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The ancient name of this town is Thirumudhukundram. As per the 2011 census, the town had a population of 73,585 of which 37,066 are males while 36,519 are females. Population of children in the ages of 0-6 is 7735 which is 10.51 % of the total population. The old Lord Siva temple (Pazhamalai Nadhar Temple or Viruthagireeswarar temple) is located in the heart of town. This is the 41st Devaram Padal Petra Siva Thiruthalam and 9th Thiruthalam in Nadu Naadu(நடுனாடு). Moovar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Siva of this temple. The South Indian Railway Company operated a number of gauge lines in South India from 1874 to 1951. History The Great Southern of India Railway Company was established with its headquarters in England in 1853. The Carnatic Railway Company was founded in 1869. The two companies merged in 1874 to form the South Indian Railway Company. The new firm was registered in London in 1890 with Trichinopoly as its headquarters.
