Virginia's 18th Senate district is one of 40 districts in the Senate of Virginia. It has been represented by Democrat Louise Lucas since 1992. Geography District 18 is located in southeastern Virginia, including all of Greensville County, Sussex County, and the City of Emporia, as well as parts of Brunswick County, Isle of Wight County, Southampton County, Surry County, and the cities of Chesapeake, Franklin, Portsmouth, and Suffolk. The district overlaps with Virginia's 3rd, 4th, and 5th congressional districts, and with the 64th, 75th, 76th, 79th, and 80th districts of the Virginia House of Delegates. Virginia’s fifth congressional district is a United States congressional district in the commonwealth of Virginia. The district is based in Southside Virginia and is heavily rural in character. It is Virginia's largest district with an area of and is larger in area than six US states (Vermont, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, and New Hampshire). The 5th District contains counties located in the Piedmont and Blue Ridge Region stretching vertically across the state from the Virginia-North Carolina Border going 250 miles up to Fauquier County in Northern Virginia, West of Washington DC. 2017 Virginia Gubernatorial Election
The 2017 Virginia gubernatorial election was held on November 7, 2017. Incumbent Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe was unable to run for reelection, as the Constitution of Virginia prohibits the officeholder from serving consecutive terms, although he later announced his campaign for a second term in the 2021 election. Primary elections took place on June 13, 2017. Virginia utilizes an open primary, in which registered voters are allowed to vote in either party's primary election. The 2020 United States presidential election in Virginia was held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, as part of the 2020 United States presidential election in which all 50 states plus the District of Columbia participated. 2011 Virginia Elections
The 2011 Virginia state elections took place on November 8, 2011. All 140 seats in the Virginia General Assembly were up for re-election, as were many local offices. Virginia Senate Prior to the election, 22 seats were held by Democrats and 18 seats were held by Republicans. Redistricting caused the 13th district to be moved from Hampton Roads to Northern Virginia and the 22nd district to be moved from the Roanoke area to a district stretching from Lynchburg to Richmond. Republicans gained two seats, making the Senate tied with 20 Democrats and 20 Republicans. Four incumbent senators chose to retire: Fred Quayle (R-13), Patsy Ticer (D-30), Mary Margaret Whipple (D-31), and William Wampler Jr. (R-40). In addition, two senators, Ralph K. The 2019 Virginia Senate election was held on November 5, 2019, concurrently with the House election, to elect members to all 40 seats in the Senate of Virginia for the 161st Virginia General Assembly and the 162nd Virginia General Assembly.
