Vincent Van Gogh's Display At Les XX, 1890
Vincent van Gogh's display at the 1890 Les XX exhibition in Brussels, Belgium, was important for several reasons. First, Van Gogh's inclusion in the annual Les XX exhibition—an invitation-only show for members only—demonstrated the recognition he received from his avant-garde peers during his lifetime. Second, his choices of works and their arrangement illustrate his thinking about his years of work in Provence. Evidently, his argument for their importance was rejected, and was washed away by the scandal his works provoked. The same works were again shown at the annual exhibition of the Artistes Indépendants in Paris which offered space for an expansion of the display. This was done by Theo van Gogh, Vincent's brother, as Vincent was suffering from long-lasting mental problems. ''Ivy'', the centerpiece of Van Gogh's arrangement, has been lost without trace since World War II. Hermann Göring is the last person photographed (by Hans Hoffmann) with this canvas while it wa ...

Sunflowers (series Of Paintings)
''Sunflowers'' (original title, in French: ''Tournesols'') is the title of two series of still life paintings by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. The first series, executed in Paris in 1887, depicts the flowers lying on the ground, while the second set, made a year later in Arles, shows a bouquet of sunflowers in a vase. In the artist's mind, both sets were linked by the name of his friend Paul Gauguin, who acquired two of the Paris versions. About eight months later van Gogh hoped to welcome and impress Gauguin again with ''Sunflowers'', now part of the painted ''Décoration for the Yellow House'' that he prepared for the guestroom of his home in Arles, where Gauguin was supposed to stay. After Gauguin's departure, van Gogh imagined the two major versions as wings of the ''Berceuse Triptych'', and finally, he included them in his Les XX in Bruxelles exhibit. The Paris ''Sunflowers'' Little is known of Van Gogh's activities during the two years he lived with his brother, The ...

Toulouse-Lautrec
Comte Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa (24 November 1864 – 9 September 1901) was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist and illustrator whose immersion in the colourful and theatrical life of Paris in the late 19th century allowed him to produce a collection of enticing, elegant, and provocative images of the sometimes decadent affairs of those times. Born into the aristocracy, Toulouse-Lautrec broke both his legs around the time of his adolescence and, due to the rare condition Pycnodysostosis, was very short as an adult due to his undersized legs. In addition to his alcoholism, he developed an affinity for brothels and prostitutes that directed the subject matter for many of his works recording many details of the late-19th-century bohemian lifestyle in Paris. Toulouse-Lautrec is among the painters described as being Post-Impressionists, with Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Georges Seurat also commonly considered as belon ...

Pushkin Museum Of Fine Arts
The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (russian: Музей изобразительных искусств имени А. С. Пушкина, abbreviated as ) is the largest museum of European art in Moscow, located in Volkhonka street, just opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The International musical festival ''Sviatoslav Richter's December nights'' has been held in the Pushkin Museum since 1981. Etymology Despite its name, the museum has no direct association with the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, other than as a posthumous commemoration. The facility was founded by professor Ivan Tsvetaev (father of the poet Marina Tsvetaeva). Tsvetaev persuaded the millionaire and philanthropist Yuriy Nechaev-Maltsov and the architect Roman Klein of the urgent need to give Moscow a fine arts museum. After going through a number of name changes, particularly in the transition to the Soviet era and the return of the Russian capital to Moscow, the museum was finally renamed to hon ...

The Red Vineyard
''The Red Vineyards near Arles'' is an oil painting by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, executed on a privately primed Toile de 30 piece of burlap in early November 1888. It depicts workers in a vineyard, and it is the only painting known by name that Van Gogh sold in his lifetime. History ''The Red Vineyard'' was exhibited for the first time at the annual exhibition of Les XX, 1890, in Brussels, and sold for 400 francs (equal to about $2,000 today) to Belgian painter and collector Anna Boch, a member of Les XX. Anna was the sister of Eugène Boch, another impressionist painter and a friend of Van Gogh, too, who had painted Boch's portrait ('' Le Peintre aux Étoiles'') in Arles, in autumn 1888. In a later letter to his brother Theo discussing the sale, Van Gogh admitted with some embarrassment that the Bochs paid the Les XX 1890 Exhibition sticker price, when in fact they probably should have gotten a "friend's price". The painting was later purchased, in 1909, from a Pa ...
