Vilnis Straume
Vilnis Straume (20 January 1937 – 2 June 2019) was a Latvian football player. Biography In 1956, Straume joined Daugava Rīga - the club for which he played until the end of his footballer career. However, in 1957 he had to serve in the Soviet Army and also played with FK Dinamo Rīga with which he together with future Daugava players Georgijs Smirnovs and Georgijs Gusarenko Georgijs Gusarenko (born 1937) is a Latvian football inspector and manager and former footballer. Gusarenko made his first steps in football in the sports school Daugava in Riga. In 1959 he played in the reserves squad of FC Dynamo Moscow. Fro ... won the Latvian Cup. Straume was a very hard working defender with one ambition - to play in the Soviet Top League. From 1960 to 1962 he achieved this ambition as Daugava competed in the Soviet Top League. Daugava Rīga
FK Daugava Rīga was a Latvian football club, based at the Daugava Stadium in Riga. They played in the Latvian Higher League. The last manager of the team was Armands Zeiberliņš. From the club's foundation in 2003 till 2009 the club was known as ''FK Jūrmala''. In 2010, they changed their name to ''FK Jūrmala-VV'', but in March 2012 the club moved to Riga, changing its name to ''FK Daugava Rīga''. Georgijs Smirnovs
Georgijs Smirnovs (born 1936) is a Latvian former football player and manager. In 2006 Latvian Football Federation selected Smirnovs as one of the 11 greatest footballers in the first 100 years of football in Latvia. Biography Born in Leningrad, Smirnovs played football with a local factory club. In 1957 he was sent to Riga, Latvia for military service. He got to play with FK Dinamo Rīga with which he won the Latvian Cup and was noted by many as a very talented forward. After just six matches that he had played with Dinamo, Vadims Ulbergs from Daugava Rīga offered Smirnovs to join the strongest Latvian club. He made his debut with Daugava in the 1st Soviet league in the 1957 and played with the club until 1971. In his best season in 1960 when Daugava played in the Soviet Top League Smirnovs scored 11 goals and was nominated to the list of the 33 best Soviet footballers of the year. Georgijs Gusarenko
Georgijs Gusarenko (born 1937) is a Latvian football inspector and manager and former footballer. Gusarenko made his first steps in football in the sports school Daugava in Riga. In 1959 he played in the reserves squad of FC Dynamo Moscow. From 1960 to 1962 he played with Daugava Rīga in the Soviet Top League. When Daugava was relegated to the first league, Gusarenko left the club for Zvejnieks Liepāja which was playing in the second soviet league. With Kompresors Rīga and Elektrons Rīga he worked for some time as both footballer and manager, he was coaching Daugava both as general manager and as assistant (he was assistant of Jānis Skredelis from 1982 to 1988). Latvian Cup
The Latvian Football Cup () is the main Single-elimination tournament, knockout cup competition in Latvian Football (soccer), football. Since 2021, its full name is Responsible Game Latvian Football Cup (''Atbildīgas spēles Latvijas kauss'') due to the sponsorship by sports betting company William Hill (bookmaker), William Hill. The tournament was launched in 1937, replacing the previous knockout tournament – the Riga Football Cup. The competition is a knockout (single elimination) tournament. Soviet Top League
The Soviet Top League, known after 1970 as the Higher League (russian: Чемпионат СССР по футболу: Высшая лига), served as the top division of Soviet Union football from 1936 until 1991. The professional top level of football competition among clubs was established in 1936 on proposition of Nikolai Starostin and was approved by the All-Union Council of Physical Culture. Originally it was named Group A. After World War II it became known as the First Group. In 1950, after another reform of football in the Soviet Union, the First Group was replaced with Class A. By 1970, the Class A had expanded to three tiers with the top tier known as the Higher Group which in 1971 was renamed into the Higher League.
