Vietnam At The 2008 Summer Olympics
Vietnam competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. It is the 13th summer games in which the nation has competed since its first appearance in 1952. Although it has sent a modest delegation every year it has competed, Vietnam had only earned one Olympic medal before Beijing (in 2000). The Vietnam Olympic Committee sent thirteen athletes to compete in eight of the 28 Olympic sports. It is the largest ever contingent for the nation, up from 11 in the 2004 games. Nguyễn Tiến Minh
Nguyễn Tiến Minh (born February 12, 1983) is a Vietnamese badminton player. His best achievement to date was the bronze medal at the World Championship in 2013. Career Introduced to badminton by his father at the early age of 10, Nguyen Tien Minh was immediately captivated by the sport. The interest soon developed into a passion which led to Tien Minh's crucial decision in 2001 when the athlete was 18 years old: to take on the path of becoming a professional badminton player instead of carrying on his education as his family wished. The young man's determination soon demonstrated its fruitful aspects when he was recruited into the national team in the same year. However, Tien Minh's career did not become well known nationwide until 2002 when he, at the age of 19, defeated the long time national champion, Nguyễn Phú Cường, and won the gold medal for the men's singles category. Gymnastics At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's Artistic Qualification
Qualifications for Women's artistic gymnastic competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics was held at the Beijing National Indoor Stadium on August 10. The results of the qualification determined the qualifiers to the finals: eight teams in the team final, 24 gymnasts in the all-around final, and eight gymnasts in each of four apparatus finals. The competition was divided into four sessions, at 10:00am, 1:30pm, 5:00pm and 8:00pm. Eriko Hirose
is a badminton player from Japan. Career She competed at the 2005 World Badminton Championships in Anaheim. In the women's singles event she reached the third round before losing to Wang Chen of Hong Kong. At the same year, she won the women's singles bronze medal at the Asian Championships after lose to her compatriot Kaori Mori in the semi final. In the 2010 BWF World Championship, she caused an upset over the world number one ranking player, Wang Yihan in the third round but lost to Wang Lin in the quarterfinals. In the 2011 All England Open, she came second in the women's singles, losing in the final to China's Wang Shixian. Hirose spent 23 years career in badminton and announced her retirement at the end of National Championships in December 2014. She then started a career as a coach in Japan National B Team. Thilini Jayasinghe
Thilini Sudhara Jayasinghe (Sinhalese: තිලිනි සුනාරි ජයසිංහ; Tamils: திலினி சுனாரி ஜயசிங்க; born 15 January 1985) is a Sri Lankan badminton player. Born in Peradeniya, Jayasinghe started playing badminton aged 9, and has joined the national team in 2000. She attended Mahamaya College and was named Best Sports Woman in 2004.
