Vacuum Insulated Evaporator
A vacuum insulated evaporator (VIE) is a form of pressure vessel that allows the bulk storage of cryogenic liquids including oxygen, nitrogen and argon for industrial processes and medical applications. The purpose of the vacuum insulation is to prevent heat transfer between the inner shell, which holds the liquid, and surrounding atmosphere. Without functioning insulation, the stored liquid will rapidly warm and undergo a phase transition to gas, increasing significantly in volume and potentially causing a catastrophic failure to the vessel due to an increase in pressure. To combat such an event, VIEs are installed with a pressure safety valve. To remain a liquid, the vessel contents must be kept at or below its critical temperature. The critical temperature of oxygen is −118 °C; above this temperature, applying more pressure will not result in a liquid, but rather a supercritical fluid A supercritical fluid (SCF) is any substance at a temperature and pressure above ... Variable Interest Entity
Variable interest entity (VIE) is a term used by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) to refer to a legal entity with certain characteristics such that a public company with a financial interest in the entity is subject to certain financial reporting requirements. VIEs rose to prominence after the Enron scandal. Some Chinese companies, such as Alibaba, use VIEs to get access to foreign capital that would otherwise not be available due to Chinese government regulations. The use of VIEs by Chinese businesses has received criticism for its lack of transparency. Background The FASB's Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) 810, ''Consolidation'', provides accounting guidance on when a reporting entity (e.g., a public company) should consolidate a legal entity as a subsidiary in the reporting entity's financial statements. If consolidated, the reporting entity will account for the subsidiary's assets, liabilities and any non-controlling interests of that legal entity in ...
