Victor Perera
Victor Perera was the first Governor of Northern Province and former Sri Lankan Inspector General of Police. Police career Perera joined the Sri Lanka Police Service in 1974 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police. Serving as the most senior Deputy Inspector General of Police he was promoted as the 30th Inspector General Police on 12 October 2006 and retired from service on 3 June 2008. He was succeeded by the senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Jayantha Wickramarathne. Political career With the division of the North Eastern Province in 2007 Perera was appointed, by President Mahinda Rajapakse, as the first Governor of Northern Province, succeeding acting governor Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrema. Perera was the first former head of the police to have been appointed as a Governor to a province. Mohan Wijewickrama
Vice Admiral Mohan Wijewickrama, RSP, VSV, USP (born 12 June 1953) is a former Sri Lankan senior naval officer turned politician. He served as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy from 2001 to 2005. He was appointed Governor of North Eastern Province from 2006 to 2007 and Governor of Eastern Province from 2007 to 2015, while serving as acting Governor of Northern Province. He is the current Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Pakistan. Education Wijewickrama was educated at Thurstan College. Chandra Fernando (police Officer)
Chandra Fernando is a former Sri Lankan police officer and was the 29th Inspector-General of Police. Fernando was educated at St Peter's College, Colombo and at Thurstan College and graduated from the Vidyodaya University with a BA in Modern History. He also gained an LLB from the Open University, Sri Lanka. He joined the Ceylon Police Force as a Probationary Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1971. In February 1991, Fernando was promoted to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG). He served as Inspector-General of Police from October 2004 to October 2006. Jayantha Wickramarathne was the 31st Sri Lankan Inspector-General of Police. Educated at Thurstan College, Colombo Wickramarathne gained a second class honours degree in Public Administration at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and later joined the Sri Lanka Police as a Probationary Assistant Superintendent. North Eastern Province, Sri Lanka
The North Eastern Province was one of the provinces of Sri Lanka. The province was created in September 1988 by merging the Northern and Eastern provinces. This merger was declared illegal by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 2006. The province was formally demerged into the Northern and Eastern provinces on 1 January 2007. The capital of the province was Trincomalee. History The Indo-Lanka Accord signed on 29 July 1987 required the Sri Lankan government to devolve powers to the provinces and, in the interim, to merge the Northern and Eastern provinces into one administrative unit.
