Verna Westwood
Verna Westwood (born 30 August 1955) is an Australian former representative rower. She was seven times an Australian national champion, represented at two World Rowing Championships and was a member of Australia's first Olympic representative women's rowing crew, competing in the women's coxed four event at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Club and state rowing A West Australian, Westwood commenced her senior rowing aged 17 at the University of Western Australia. She won the Australian University Championship title in a Uni of WA coxed four in 1976. During her representative years at the elite level she raced at national regattas in Melbourne University Boat Club colours. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. Pam Westendorf
Pamela Westendorf (born 28 September 1959) is an Australian former representative rower. She won twenty-three Australian national championships, was an Olympian, represented at five World Championships over a twelve-year period and won a silver medal at the 1990 World Rowing Championships. Club and state rowing Westendorf started her rowing career as a schoolgirl in Dimboola, Victoria. Her senior club rowing was from the Dimboola Rowing Club and later from the Melbourne University Boat Club. Westendorf first made Victorian state representation as a 15 year old in 1974 Colts series raced against New Zealand. Rowing is the act of propelling a human-powered watercraft using the sweeping motions of oars to displace water and generate reactional propulsion. Susie Palfreyman (born 11 Feb 1952) is an Australian former representative rowing coxswain. She was a five time national champion, a representative at World Championships and in 1980 was a member of Australia's first Olympic representative women's rowing crew. Club and state rowing Susie Palfreyman commenced her senior rowing with the University of Western Australia Boat Club. Later she rowed with the Melbourne University Ladies Boat Club and Mercantile Rowing Club. She first made state selection for Western Australia in 1973. Sally Harding (born 7 October 1952) is an Australian former representative rower. She was a thirteen time Australian national champion, three time representative at World Rowing Championships and was a member of Australia's first Olympic representative women's rowing crew, competing in the women's coxed four event at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Club and state rowing Harding commenced her senior rowing with the YWCA Rowing Club in Melbourne but then moved to the Melbourne University Boat Club in 1973. In 1976 and from 1978 she raced for the MUBC although in 1977 Harding and her fellow Victorian sweep oarswoman Vivian Roe rowed from the Mosman Rowing Club under coach Tim Conrad in an effort to ensure their national selection.
