Verdun Borough Council
The Verdun borough council is the local governing body of Verdun, a borough in the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The council consists of seven members: the borough mayor (who also serves as a Montreal city councillor), two city councillors representing the borough's electoral districts, and four borough councillors representing of the same electoral districts (two per division). Équipe Denis Coderre pour Montréal won a narrow majority on council in the 2013 Montreal municipal election, taking four seats to Projet Montréal's three. The same composition was returned in the 2017 election; however, shortly after the election, Mayor Parenteau left his party and became an independent upon assuming a position on the Montreal Executive Committee, leaving an evenly split council. Verdun, Quebec
Verdun (; , ) is a borough (''arrondissement'') of the city of Montreal, Quebec, located in the southwestern part of the island. Long known as a working class neighbourhood, it has experienced significant gentrification and social change in the 21st century. Etymology The borough's name is a shortening of Saverdun, in France, the hometown of its early settler Zacharie Dupuy. It is not derived from the Battle of Verdun in World War I, predating the battle by centuries. History Early History There is archaeological evidence of indigenous peoples in the area as early as 5,500 years ago. A portage along what is now the boulevard LaSalle was used to pass the Lachine Rapids. Manon Gauthier
Manon Gauthier is a politician and administrator in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She served on the Montreal city council since November 2013, and was a member of the Montreal executive committee (i.e., the municipal cabinet) in Denis Coderre's administration throughout this time with responsibility for culture. Gauthier was previously the chief executive officer of the Segal Centre for Performing Arts from 2009 to 2013. Gauthier retired from city council in August 2017. Raymond Savard
Pierre Raymond Savard (29 June 1927 – 20 July 2021) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. His career included various business interests including merchandising, administration and store ownership. Savard entered national politics at Quebec's Verdun electoral district following a by-election victory on 24 May 1977. He was re-elected in the 1979 and 1980 federal elections, but defeated in 1984 by Gilbert Chartrand of the Progressive Conservative party. He served in the latter stages of the 30th Canadian Parliament, and for full terms in the 31st and 32nd Canadian Parliaments. The 2001 Montreal municipal election took place on November 4, 2001, to elect a mayor and city councillors in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Gérald Tremblay defeated incumbent Pierre Bourque to become mayor of the newly amalgamated city. This was the only municipal election that was held for the amalgamated city (the amalgamation took effect on January 1, 2002), as the next municipal election was for the defused city. Coalition Montréal (''Montreal Coalition'') was a municipal political party in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, formed in 2013 to support the candidacy of Marcel Côté for mayor of Montreal. Gérald Tremblay (born September 20, 1942) is a former Canadian politician and businessman who served as mayor of Montreal from 2002 until his resignation in 2012. He also served as president of the Montreal Metropolitan Community. Before becoming mayor he had a long career in business and management. Tremblay resigned as Mayor on November 5, 2012 following allegations of corruption made at the Charbonneau Commission.
