Vancouver Women's Caucus
The Vancouver Women’s Caucus is Canadian feminist organization active from 1968 to 1971. The group founded an abortion awareness campaign which included the Abortion Caravan. The group was also responsible for shutting down Parliament for the first time in Canadian history. Other initiatives include advocacy for working women and hosting a peace conference with Indo-Chinese women. The group was initially founded in 1968 by students from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia. History The Vancouver Women's Caucus (VWC) began in the summer of 1968 as an all female student club called the ''Feminist Action League''. Shortly after, the group was renamed the ''Vancouver Women's Caucus''. They originally were interested in providing services for women on campus. Abortion Caravan
The Abortion Caravan was a feminist protest movement formed by The Vancouver Women's Caucus in 1970 which travelled across Canada from Vancouver to Ottawa to advocate for increased access to legal abortion. A 1969 amendment to the Canadian Criminal Code legalized abortion under certain circumstances (whereas it had previously been considered a criminal offence in all cases). Unhappy with this incremental step, the Abortion Caravan advocated for abortion to be completely removed from the Criminal Code. Upwards of 300 supporters gathered in Ottawa on Parliament Hill and at the residence of the prime minister at the time, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, to protest the amendment. Vancouver Indo-Chinese Women's Conference
The Vancouver Indochinese Women's Conference (VICWC) took place in April 1971, where close to a thousand women from Canada and the United States met with Indochinese women in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in a protest of the Vietnam War organized by the Voice of Women. There was also a sister conference in Toronto, held from April 9 to 11, 1971. These women came from various backgrounds and cultures; black Chicana/Latina, white, and Indochinese women all participated. This conference was a spinoff from an earlier and smaller Indochinese feminist conference which was held in 1967 to give voice to marginalized women. ''The Peak'' is the independent student newspaper of Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. It is split into six major sections: News, Opinions, Features, Arts, Sports, and Humour. History ''The Peak'' was founded on October 6, 1965 through the merger of SFU's two original student newspapers, ''The Tartan'' and ''The SF View''. The New Left was a broad political movement mainly in the 1960s and 1970s consisting of activists in the Western world who campaigned for a broad range of social issues such as civil and political rights, environmentalism, feminism, gay rights, gender roles and drug policy reforms.
