Valparaíso Funiculars
There are 16 extant historical ''elevators'' ( es, ascensores) in the city of Valparaíso in Chile. Technically most of these elevators are ''bona fide'' funiculars. Only one of them, the Ascensor Polanco, is a true vertical elevator. They were mainly constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Description Valparaíso in Chile, due to the number of hills above the so-called ''plan'' has had up to 30 ''ascensores''. Only 16 of them remained extant today and they are declared National Monuments of Chile. only 7 of elevators are in operation, the other 9 are under a process of restoration and modernisation. These extant ''ascensores'' are a part of the ''Historic Quarter of the Seaport City of Valparaíso'' site which since 2003 is included into the UNESCO's World Heritage List. Ascensor Concepción
The Ascensor Concepción is the oldest of the funiculars of Valparaíso, Chile. Inaugurated on December 1, 1883, It connects the Elías Alley, which faces the Reloj Turri on the Plan de Valparaíso, with the Gervasoni Promenade on the Concepción Hill. The funicular was declared a Historic Monument on September 1, 1998. History In 1882, the Compañía de Ascensores Mecánicos de Valparaíso was established to build a new mode of transport for the use of the residents of the Concepción Hill, which was inaugurated on December 1, 1883 by the authorities of the city. Valparaíso Metro
The Valparaíso Metro ( es, Metro Valparaíso, formerly called "Merval") is the commuter rail system serving the urban conglomeration of Gran Valparaíso, Chile. Reina Victoria Lift
The Reina Victoria lift (''ascensor Reina Victoria'') is a funicular located in Valparaíso, Chile. The funicular is owned by the municipality and stretches from Elias Street to Paseo Dimalow. It was built 1902 and opened 1903. The lower station is located next to Plaza Anibal Pinto. The Elias stairs to Cerro Alegre are located next to the station. The upper station leads to a square which connects to Paseo Dimalow through a bridge from the early 19th century. The station was restored, and an arrival square including a playground for children, seats, and street lights were built. Polanco Lift
The Polanco Lift is a passenger elevator located in Valparaíso, Chile. It consists of three stations and connects Simpson Street with Polanco Hill. This lift is the only "true" elevator in the city, as all others are technically funiculars. Today it is more visited by tourists than by the local residents. History Construction began in 1913 and concluded in 1915. Inaugurated in 1916, the lift was developed by engineer Federico Page with the assistance of the Easton Lift Company. It was declared a National Monument of Chile in 1976. Location The lift is located on Polanco Hill. The lower entrance is on Simpson Street. The first station is accessible through a tunnel. Ascensor Mariposas
The Ascensor Mariposas is one of the 15 funiculars left in Valparaíso, Chile. Inaugurated in 1906, its route is flanked by houses and shrubs and its upper terminus is a street on the Mariposas Hill. Baquedano street passes over the tracks of the funicular. It was declared as a National Monument of Chile in 1998, within the category of Historic Monuments. El Peral Lift
The El Peral funicular ( es, Ascensor El Peral) is located between two urban centers of Valparaíso, Chile, Plaza de la Justicia (Justice Square), a quiet place in Valparaiso’s downtown and Paseo Yugoslavo (Yugoslav Walk) that offers a sightseeing balcony with a vista of the bay and mountains. The Ascensor Barón, built in 1906, is a funicular located on its namesake hill in Valparaíso, Chile, and was declared a Historic Monument on September 1, 1998. Description The Ascensor Barón has great urban significance by virtue of being the connection between the Plan de Valparaíso with one of the most tourist scenic viewpoints in the eastern section of the natural amphitheater where sits the city.
