The Valparaiso Beacons football program is the intercollegiate American football team for Valparaiso University located in the U.S. state of Indiana. The team competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) as a member of the Pioneer Football League (PFL). Valparaiso's first football team was fielded in 1919. The team plays its home games at the 5,000-seat Brown Field in Valparaiso, Indiana. Landon Fox has served as the team's head coach since 2019. Valparaiso was known as the Crusaders through the 2019 season. Heartland Collegiate Conference
The Heartland Collegiate Conference (HCC) was a football-only intercollegiate athletic conference that evolved out of the Indiana Collegiate Conference (ICC) and competed between 1978 and 1989. Originally comprising the football-playing arm of the ICC, the HCC became its own separate entity after the ICC was dissolved in 1979. The HCC continued for ten more seasons before its own collapse in 1989. When formed in 1978, the conference had members in the states of Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Norm Amundsen
Norman Robert Amundsen (born September 28, 1932) is a former American football player and coach and college athletics administrator. He played college football at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and professionally as a guard for the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL). Amundsen served as the head football coach at Beloit College from 1962 to 1967 and Valparaiso University from 1968 to 1976. He was also the athletic director at Valparaiso from 1975 to 1979. Emory Bauer
Emory George Bauer (February 13, 1913 – October 1, 1989) was an American football, basketball, and baseball coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Concordia Teachers College—now known as Concordia University Chicago–in River Forest, Illinois from 1941 to 1942 and at Valparaiso University from 1946 to 1967, compiling a career college football record of 114–89–8. Loren Ellis
Loren Edward Ellis (January 7, 1904 – December 19, 1984) was an American football and basketball coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head basketball coach at Valparaiso University from 1941 to 1947 and at Stetson University during the 1950–51 season, compiling a career college basketball record of 101–71. His best squad was his 1944–45 team, they finished with a 21–3 record and a 10-game winning streak. They were inducted into the Valparaiso Hall of Fame in 2004. His best player was Robert Dille, a consensus All-American following the 1943–44 season. Ellis was also the football coach at Valparaiso from 1942 to 1945, though the school did not field a football team in 1943 or 1944. Cigar Bowl
The Cigar Bowl was a post-season college football bowl game held in Tampa, Florida, featuring small college teams. The nine editions of the bowl were held from January 1947 (following the 1946 season) through December 1954 (following the 1954 season). History The Cigar Bowl was played at Phillips Field, which was located across the Hillsborough River from downtown Tampa at the current site of Tampa Preparatory School and Julian Lane Riverfront Park. The bowl's name was inspired by the local cigar industry, which had been a major factor in Tampa's growth around the turn of the 20th century. Dave Cecchini is an American football coach. He was announced as the 27th head coach for Bucknell University in February 2019. Previously, in 2014, he was hired as head football coach at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. Before coming to Valparaiso, Cecchini worked as an assistant coach at Harvard University, The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and Lehigh University. Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference
The Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC) was a football-only NCAA Division II conference formed for the 1990 football season. The conference was formed as the result of a merger of the football only Heartland Collegiate Conference and the football playing members of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The membership in the MIFC was a somewhat unstable occurrence with membership ranging from 11 members when it formed in 1990 to 14 members in the final 1998 season.
