	Valentiner Group In mathematics, the Valentiner group is the perfect triple cover of the alternating group on 6 points, and is a group of order 1080. It was found by in the form of an action of ''A''6 on the complex projective plane, and was studied further by . All perfect alternating groups have perfect double covers. In most cases this is the universal central extension. The two exceptions are ''A''6 (whose perfect triple cover is the Valentiner group) and ''A''7, whose universal central extensions have centers of order 6. 	Karl Wilhelm Valentiner Karl Wilhelm Valentiner (22 February 1845 in Eckernförde – 1 April 1931) was a German astronomer. Life In 1874, Wilhelm Valentiner led a successful German expedition to Zhifu ( China) to observe a solar eclipse. 1875, He took over the directorship of the Mannheim Observatory in 1875. Since the observing conditions in the Mannheim city centre were deteriorating, Grand Duke Frederick I of Baden approved Valentiner's request to relocate the observatory in Karlsruhe in 1880. The telescope, however, was located in a makeshift hut in Karlsruhe Nymphenburg Park. Much to the annoyance of Valentiner, now appointed Professor of the University of Karlsruhe, no new observatory was built. He decided to apply for a position at Königstuhl near Heidelberg. He was the third highest-scoring U-boat commander of the war, and was awarded the Pour le Mérite for his achievements. He was also listed as a war criminal by the Allies, for killing hundreds of civilians by sinking the passenger liner without warning on 30 December 1915, contrary to international law. 	Wilhelm Valentiner William Reinhold Valentiner (May 2, 1880 – September 6, 1958) was a German-American art historian, art critic and museum administrator. He was educated and trained in Europe, first working at the Mauritshuis in The Hague and at museums in Berlin. In 1907 he moved to the United States to become the first curator of the department of decorative arts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum in New York City. After returning to Europe to serve in the German Army in World War I, Valentiner later was appointed to other positions in the US. From the mid-1920s, he strongly influenced the development of museum administration in the United States. He served as director of the Detroit Institute of Art in Michigan, from 1924 to 1945. Valentiner became a naturalized US citizen about 1930 and lived in the country for nearly half his life in total.
