''Somewhere in Europe'' ( hu, Valahol Európában) is a 1948 Hungarian drama film directed by Géza von Radványi. It depicts the aftermath of World War II and specifically the lives of a gang of orphaned children in a postwar setting. The gang of children steal, cheat, and pillage due largely to the harsh circumstances and the world around them. The film has been compared to Italian neorealism. The film was chosen to be part of the New Budapest Twelve, a list of Hungarian films considered the best in 2000. Géza Von Radványi
Géza von Radványi (born Géza Grosschmid; 26 September 1907 – 27 November 1986) was a Hungarian film director, cinematographer, producer and writer. Biography Born Géza Grosschmid, he took the name Radványi from his paternal grandmother. His brother was the writer Sándor Márai. Géza von Radványi made his debut in journalism before moving to cinema in 1941. He aimed to create a popular cinema in the 1950s and 1960s that would rival Hollywood studios, due to European coproductions. He began at the end of the 1940s, with '' Somewhere in Europe'' and ''Women Without Names'', neorealist dramas with no concession to the ravages of war and the postwar period. Miklós Gábor
Miklós Gábor (7 April 1919 – 2 July 1998) was a Hungarian actor, most remembered for his roles in films ''Valahol Európában'' and ''Mágnás Miska''. He was husband to Éva Ruttkai, and later Éva Vass. Miklós Gábor was born 7 April 1919, in Zalaegerszeg. After finishing the Academy of Drama in 1941, he joined the Madách Theatre. From 1945-1954 he was the member of the National Theatre, leaving in 1975 for the Katona József theatre in Kecskemét. From 1979 to 1984, he worked in the Népszínház theatre, after he returned to the National Theatre. In 1991, he joined the Független Színpad theatre. He died on 2 July 1998, in Budapest. Italian neorealism ( it, Neorealismo), also known as the Golden Age, is a national film movement characterized by stories set amongst the poor and the working class. They are filmed on location, frequently with non-professional actors. They primarily address the difficult economic and moral conditions of post-World War II Italy, representing changes in the Italian psyche and conditions of everyday life, including poverty, oppression, injustice and desperation. The Budapest Twelve is a list of 12 Hungarian films considered the best from the period between 1948 and 1968. The films were chosen in secret ballot of the Hungarian film industry in 1968. Budapest Twelve The International Federation of Film Critics ''(FIPRESCI)'' held its annual conference in Budapest in 1968, the year that marked the 20th anniversary of the nationalization of the Hungarian film industry. On this occasion, the department of film critics of the Alliance of Hungarian Filmmakers choose the best 12 films in a secret ballot. The films were screened at the 4.
