Vali (Ramayana)
Vali ( sa, वाली, nominative singular of the stem वालिन् (''Valin'')), also known as Bali, was a king of Kishkindha in the Hindu epic Ramayana. He was the husband of Tara, the biological son of Vriksharaja, the elder brother of Sugriva, and father of Angada. He was killed by Rama, an ''avatar'' of Vishnu. Vali was invincible during the''Treta Yuga''. Vali defeated some great warriors, only because he was blessed with the ability to obtain half the strength of his opponent. Rama killed Vali by shooting him in the chest. However, during his first attempt, Rama could not recognise between Vali and Sugriva due to their resemblance. Thus, during the next attempt, Sugriva wore a garland of red flowers and went to battle with Vali. This time, Rama could recognise Vali and shot an arrow that killed him. Tiruchirapalli Srinivasan Rangarajan, professionally credited by his pseudonym Vaali (born 29 October 1931 – 18 July 2013) was an Indian poet who is the highest songs wrote lyricist in cinema and whose works were in Tamil, had a five-decade long association with the Tamil film industry, wrote over 15,000 songs. He acted in a number of films, including '' Sathya'', ''Hey Ram'', '' Paarthale Paravasam'' and '' Poikkal Kudhirai''. He was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour in 2007. Biography Vaali was born in a Iyengar brahmin family as T. S. Rangarajan on 29 October 1931 to Srinivasan Iyengar and Ponnammal Iyengar. His native place is Thirupparaithurai, Tiruchirappalli district. ''Vaalee'' is a 1999 Indian Tamil-language psychological romantic thriller film written and directed by S. J. Suryah in his directorial debut. The film stars Ajith Kumar in dual roles with Simran and Jyothika (her Tamil debut). Vivek, Rajeev, Pandu and Sujitha appear in important supporting roles. A modern-day adaptation of the legend of Vali from the ''Ramayana'', it revolves around Shiva and Deva, two identical twin brothers, with Deva being deaf-mute. However, when Shiva marries his sweetheart Priya, Deva becomes obsessed with and lusts for Priya. Suryah completed the script of ''Vaalee'' in 60 days, and the project was picked up for production by S. S. Chakravarthy of NIC Arts. The soundtrack was composed by Deva and lyrics were written by Vairamuthu. The cinematography was handled by Jeeva while the editing was done by the duo of B. Lenin and V. T. Vijayan.
