VMI Keydets Football
The VMI Keydets football team represents the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. The Keydets compete in the Southern Conference of the NCAA Division I FCS, and are coached by Danny Rocco, named head coach on December 3, 2022. VMI plays their home contests at 10,000-seat Alumni Memorial Field, as they have since 1962. Historically VMI's biggest rival was Virginia Tech. Today, VMI's biggest rival is The Citadel, as the two teams have battled 72 times, with The Citadel leading the series 40–30–2. The series was dubbed "The Military Classic of the South" in 1976 as a reference to the two school's status as the last two remaining all-military schools in the south, a region once rich with military colleges. The winner of each game receives an award known as the Silver Shako. The Silver Shako has been held by VMI since 2019. The last contest occurred on April 17, 2021. Jim Miller (athletic Director)
Jim Miller was the athletic director at the University of Richmond from 2000 until 2012. Prior to moving to Richmond, Miller was the executive associate director of athletics at North Carolina State University. Miller joined the NC State athletic program in 1990 as compliance officer and overseeing public relations and marketing. In 1999, a restructuring within the NC State athletic department resulted in athletic director Les Robinson taking responsibility for fundraising and promotion, while Miller became responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the athletic department. In college, Miller played basketball and baseball at Old Dominion University. Washington & Lee Generals Football
The Washington and Lee Generals football team represents Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. The Generals compete at NCAA Division III level as members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. History 19th century Washington and Lee football dates back to 1873 with a one-game season, featuring a 4–2 win over the VMI Keydets. No player or coaching records are known from that game. UVA historians also remark on a game played between Virginia and Washington and Lee in 1871 with no records. The Generals would not have another intercollegiate team until 1890. 20th century The first golden era of W&L football began in 1905. 1899 VMI Keydets Football Team
The 1899 VMI Keydets football team represented the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in their ninth season of organized football. Sam Boyle coached his second season for the Keydets, which featured only one game—a 39–0 win over . Although the team only played one game in mid-October, the squad was assembled for practice in early September. The 1899 football season at VMI was cut short by an outbreak of typhoid fever on the campus. As reported by one account: "VMI had time to crush only Washington and Lee 39–0 before the 1899 season was abruptly ended by an outbreak of typhoid fever which closed the Institute for six weeks." On October 16, 1899, all 250 cadets were sent to their homes on account of the outbreak. At least one cadet died in the outbreak, and the school was not re-opened until November 28, 1899—after the football season had ended. Walter Herron Taylor III (July 5, 1872 – August 1, 1960) was an American football coach. He was the first head football coach at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, Virginia, serving for the 1891 season and compiling a record of 3–0–1.
