V. Lamar Gudger
Vonno Lamar Gudger Jr. (April 30, 1919 – August 2, 2004) represented North Carolina's 11th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 1977 to 1981. Gudger, who was born in Asheville, had several degrees from the University of North Carolina, served in the United States Army Air Forces from 1942 to 1945, and subsequently became a lawyer, serving as solicitor for the state from 1952 to 1954. He was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1951 to 1952 and a member of the North Carolina Senate from 1971 to 1977 before his election to the federal Congress. Following an unsuccessful 1980 reelection campaign, he served as a Buncombe County special superior court judge from 1984 to 1989. North Carolina's 11th Congressional District
North Carolina's 11th congressional district encompasses most of Western North Carolina. Since January 3, 2021, the district has been represented by Madison Cawthorn. Redistricting The 11th district has historically been known for its volatile politics and was once considered one of the most competitive congressional districts in North Carolina. It was traditionally anchored by the heavily Democratic city of Asheville, with the rest of the district being split between Democratic-leaning counties in the south and Republican-leaning counties in the north. Consequently, congressional races were historically hard-fought and often very close. In 2011, the Republican-controlled legislature redrew the district, shifting much of Asheville to the 10th district, where the city's Democratic tilt was diluted by the overwhelming Republican inclination of the rest of the district. Bill Hendon
William Martin Hendon (November 9, 1944 – June 20, 2018) was an American author, POW/MIA activist, and two-term Republican U.S. Congressman from North Carolina's 11th District. Political career In 1980, Hendon ousted two-term incumbent Democrat V. Lamar Gudger to become the first Republican to represent what is now the 11th since 1929. For the rest of the decade, Hendon's rivalry with Democrat Jamie Clarke gained national attention. In 1982, Clarke defeated Hendon's bid for re-election by less than 1,500 votes. In 1984 Hendon gained revenge by defeating Clarke's bid for re-election by just two percentage points—likely helped by Ronald Reagan's landslide victory.
