V-A-C Foundation
V-A-C Foundation is an international non-profit private organization founded in 2009 with an emphasis on supporting contemporary art exhibitions and projects emerging from Russia and the former Soviet Union. History Founded in 2009 by businessman and philanthropist Leonid Mikhelson and Teresa Iarocci Mavica, who has been Director of the Foundation since its inception, the V-A-C Foundation is a nonprofit organization that initiates, supports, presents, and preserves contemporary art projects by internationally based visual and multidisciplinary artists, with a particular emphasis on artists located in, or emerging from, the Russian Federation and the former Soviet Union. Leonid Viktorovich Mikhelson (russian: Леони́д Ви́кторович Михельсо́н; born 11 August 1955) is a Russian billionaire businessman, CEO, chairman and major shareholder of the Russian gas company Novatek. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Mikhelson obtained a stake in a privatized pipeline construction company out of which he formed Novatek. GES-2 ( rus, ГЭС-2), also known as MGES-2 and Tramvaynaya ( rus, Трамвайная, or ''Tram power station'') – is a decommissioned power station on the Bolotnaya Embankment, in the Yakimanka District of Moscow. Originally launched in 1907, it was the second major power station built in Moscow. GES-2 operated from 1907 to 2014. Renzo Piano (; born 14 September 1937) is an Italian architect. His notable buildings include the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (with Richard Rogers, 1977), The Shard in London (2012), the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City (2015), İstanbul Modern in Istanbul (2022) and Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens (2016). Starchitect is a portmanteau used to describe architects whose celebrity and critical acclaim have transformed them into idols of the architecture world and may even have given them some degree of fame among the general public. Celebrity status is generally associated with avant-gardist novelty.
