Uwe Ackermann
Uwe Ackermann (born 12 September 1960 in Zwickau, Bezirk Karl-Marx-Stadt) is a retired East German hurdler. He won the bronze medal at the 1982 European Championships with 48.64 seconds. His personal best time was 48.50 seconds, achieved in July 1982 in Karl-Marx-Stadt. This ranks him fourth among German 400 m hurdlers, behind Harald Schmid Harald Schmid (; born 29 September 1957) is a retired German track and field athlete who competed in the sprints and hurdles. The Bezirk Karl-Marx-Stadt, also known as Bezirk Chemnitz, was a district (''Bezirk'') of East Germany. The administrative seat and the main town was Karl-Marx-Stadt, renamed back to Chemnitz during the reunification of Germany. 400 Metres Hurdles
The 400 metres hurdles is a track and field hurdling event. The event has been on the Olympic athletics programme since 1900 for men and since 1984 for women. On a standard outdoor track, 400 metres is the length of the inside lane, once around the stadium. Runners stay in their lanes the entire way after starting out of the blocks and must clear ten hurdles that are evenly spaced around the track. The hurdles are positioned and weighted so that they fall forward if bumped into with sufficient force, to prevent injury to the runners. Although there is no longer any penalty for knocking hurdles over, runners prefer to clear them cleanly, as touching them during the race slows runners down. The best male athletes can run the 400 m hurdles in a time of around 46 seconds, while the very best female athletes achieve a time of around 51 seconds. Harald Schmid
Harald Schmid (; born 29 September 1957) is a retired German track and field athlete who competed in the sprints and hurdles. He was one of the best 400 metres hurdles runners in the world during his career. Career Schmid won bronze with the West German 4 × 400 m relay team at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal as well as an individual bronze in the 400 m hurdles at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984. In addition, he won silver at the 1983 World Championships in the 400 m hurdles and the 4 × 400 m relay and a further bronze in 400 m hurdles at the 1987 World Championships. At the latter, he finished only 0.02 s behind the gold medalist Edwin Moses; Schmid's duels with Moses during the late 1970s and early 1980s were famous and Schmid was the last person to beat Moses before his streak of 122 consecutive victories. Olaf Hense (born 19 November 1967, in Dortmund) is a retired German hurdler. He competed at the 1991 World Championships and the 1992 Summer Olympics without reaching the final. He won a bronze medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay at the 1993 World Championships, with teammates Rico Lieder, Karsten Just and Thomas Schönlebe. His personal best time was 48.48 seconds, achieved in June 1993 in Rome. Edgar Itt (born 8 June 1967) is a retired West German athlete.
