Usha Ramanathan
Usha Ramanathan is an Indian human right activist. She is the South Asia Editor of ''Law, Environment and Development Journal'' (LEAD Journal), a peer-reviewed academic journal jointly published by IELRC and SOAS. Background and personal life Ramanathan was born in a South Indian family. She is an alumnus of Madras University. She studied law at Madras university, the University of Nagpur and Delhi University. She is married to Justice S. Muralidhar, presently chief justice of the Orissa High Court. Career Ramanathan is research fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, teaches environmental law, labour law and consumer law at the Indian Law Institute and is a regular guest professor many universities around the world. Her research interests include human rights, displacement, torts and environment. She has published extensively in India and abroad. A human rights defender or human rights activist is a person who, individually or with others, acts to promote or protect human rights. They can be journalists, environmentalists, whistleblowers, trade unionists, lawyers, teachers, housing campaigners, participants in direct action, or just individuals acting alone. They can defend rights as part of their jobs or in a voluntary capacity. As a result of their activities, human rights defenders (HRDs) are often subjected to reprisals including smears, surveillance, harassment, false charges, arbitrary detention, restrictions on the right to freedom of association, physical attack, and even murder. In 2020, at least 331 HRDs were murdered in 25 countries. South Indian People
The Dravidian peoples, or Dravidians, are an ethnolinguistic and cultural group living in South Asia who predominantly speak any of the Dravidian languages. There are around 250 million native speakers of Dravidian languages. Orissa High Court
The Orissa High Court is the High Courts of India, High Court for the Indian States and union territories of India, state of Odisha. The then Bengal Presidency was a vast province including present day Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, and West Bengal. It was difficult to administratively manage such a vast area, inhabited by people speaking in different languages and having different traditions.
