Uruguayan Culture
The culture of Uruguay is diverse in its nature since the nation's population is one of multicultural origins. Uruguay has a legacy of artistic and literary traditions, especially for its small size. The culture of Uruguay is known to be heavily European influenced, mostly by the contribution of its alternating conquerors, Spain and Portugal. However, from the year 1858 to 1940, large waves of European immigrants began arriving to Uruguay, with the majority of the immigrants coming from Italy. Minor European immigrant groups – Frenchmen, Germans, Swiss, Russians, Jews, and Armenians, among others – also migrated to Uruguay. The settlement of the European immigrants has resulted in traditions that integrate this diversity with the indigenous people or Charrúa elements. Uruguay (; ), officially the Oriental Republic of Uruguay ( es, República Oriental del Uruguay), is a country in South America. It shares borders with Argentina to its west and southwest and Brazil to its north and northeast; while bordering the Río de la Plata to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. It is part of the Southern Cone region of South America. Casapueblo
Casapueblo is a building constructed by the Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. It is located in Punta Ballena, from Punta del Este, Uruguay. Initially, it was the artist's summer home and workshop, and includes a museum, an art gallery, a cafeteria and a hotel in its facilities. It was the permanent residence of its creator, where he worked and where he spent his last days there. History Casapueblo began to be built in 1958 around a wooden box made with planks found on the coast, called ''La Pionera'' (The Pioneer), by Carlos Páez Vilaró. This box was his first atelier. Casapueblo was designed with a style that can be compared to the houses on the Mediterranean coast of Santorini, but the artist used to refer to the hornero's nest, a typical bird of Uruguay, when referring to this type of construction. Claudio Silveira Silva
Claudio Silveira Silva (1939–2007) was a Uruguayan artist, writer and sculptor. Life Silva had a Brazilian father and a Uruguayan mother. He spent his early life in Montevideo, where his family had moved after his birth. He studied painting and etching at the National School of Fine Arts, and earned a scholarship in Paris to the ''Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts'' for exhibiting his printing abilities in the city. From 1974 until his death in 2007, he took up wood sculpting in a range of ductility. He taught drawing classes and ran a plastic sculpting workshop in Durazno, Uruguay. Águeda Dicancro
Águeda Dicancro (1938 – August 14, 2019) was a Uruguayan sculptor from Montevideo, noted for her plastic art. Her art is featured at the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales in Montevideo. Life Dicancro studied at the University of the Republic National School of Fine Arts (') between 1960 and 1964, and later at Uruguay's Universidad del Trabajo. She also studied engraving and cement sculpture under Spanish sculptor Eduardo Yepes, before graduating as a professional ceramist in 1964. She was awarded a scholarship from the Organization of American States and traveled to Mexico in 1964 to study ceramics at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma's School of Applied Arts, and was awarded a second scholarship to study gold and silver metalworking at Mexico's School of Design. Juan José Calandria
Juan José Calandria (December 12, 1902July 18, 1980) was a Uruguayan painter and sculptor. Biography Early life Calandria was born on December 12, 1902 in Canelones, Uruguay. Upon graduating from school, he studied at the Escuela de Artes Decorativos and the Escuela Industrial in Montevideo with an architectural career in mind. He became so interested in sculpture, however, that he soon devoted his entire time to studies in that field. By the time he was eighteen, Calandria had had a one-man show with ensuing honors and commissions. At this time, he also won the most important art scholarship offered in Uruguay—a four-year period of study abroad. José Luis Zorrilla De San Martín
José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín (5 September 1891 – 24 May 1975) was a Uruguayan sculptor and painter. One of the pivotal sculptors from Uruguay, his most significant impact was through the monuments he created in the capital city of Montevideo. His style displayed elements of aesthetic baroque incorporated with modern sculpture. Biography Early life Born in Madrid in 1891, he was the son of the writer Juan Zorrilla de San Martín, who served in the court of Alfonso XIII as Ambassador of Uruguay. José Belloni
José Belloni (September 12, 1882 – November 28, 1965) was a Uruguayan sculptor of the Realist school. Biography José Belloni was born in Montevideo, in 1882; his father was Swiss from Ticino, and his mother Basque from Spain. His family returned to Europe in 1890, however, and the Bellonis settled in Lugano, Switzerland. He took an early interest in sculpture, and was mentored by Luis Vasseli, earning a scholarship that briefly took him to Uruguay, in 1899. He later enrolled in the Munich Academy, and participated in numerous exhibitions throughout Europe. Returning to Uruguay, Belloni became an instructor in the Committee for the Encouragement of Fine Arts, and in 1914, he was picked to succeed painter Carlos María Herrera as director of the institution. Carlos Páez Vilaró
Carlos Páez Vilaró (1 November 1923 – 24 February 2014) was a Uruguayan abstract artist, painter, potter, sculptor, muralist, writer, composer and constructor. Life and work Carlos Páez Vilaró was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1923. He took up drawing in 1939 and relocated to Buenos Aires, where he worked as a printing apprentice in the industrial Barracas section of the Argentine capital. Returning to Montevideo in the late 1940s, he developed an interest in Afro-Uruguayan culture. Settling in Montevideo's primarily black neighbourhood of "Mediomundo" ("Half-World"), he studied the Candombé and Comparsa dances characteristic to the culture. Felipe Seade
Felipe Seade (1912 – 18 January 1969) was a painter and teacher of Lebanese descent who spent most of his life in Uruguay. Seade was born in Antofagasta, Chile, the elder son of a Lebanese immigrant family. Eleven years later his whole family moved to Montevideo, Uruguay. At the age of 12 Seade began working as an assistant to the Muralist Enrique Albertazzi and the painter Guillermo Rodríguez. Under Rodríguez' influence Seade took some painting courses at the Fine Arts Circle school. He had his first show in 1925. Pedro Figari
Pedro Figari (June 29, 1861 – July 24, 1938) was a Uruguayan painter, lawyer, writer, and politician. Although he did not begin the practice until his later years, he is best known as an early modernist painter who emphasized capturing the everyday aspects of life in his work. In most of his pieces, he attempts to capture the essence of his home by painting local customs that he had observed in his childhood. Figari painted primarily from memory, a technique that gives his work a far more personal feeling. With his unique style, which involved painting without the intention to create an illusion, he, along with other prominent Latin-American artists such as Diego Rivera and Tarsila do Amaral, sparked a revolution of identity in the art world of Latin America.
