Uroyoán Ramón Emeterio Walker Ramos (born in Brooklyn, New York) is a mathematician, college professor, and former President of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). He completed a bachelor's degree in mathematics at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus A university () is an institution of higher (or tertiary) education and research which awards academic degrees in several academic disciplines. Universities typically offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. In the United States, t ... (UPRM), and a master's and Ph.D. both from Louisiana State University. Before his appointment as president he served at several roles including as associate dean of administrative affair at UPRM, associate director for graduate studies at UPRM, academic senator, and member of the board of trustees of the whole UPR system. Cronyism
Cronyism is the spoils system practice of partiality in awarding jobs and other advantages to friends or trusted colleagues, especially in politics and between politicians and supportive organizations. For example, cronyism occurs when appointing "cronies" to positions of authority regardless of their qualifications. Jorge Haddock Acevedo (; born 15 August 1955) is a Puerto Rican engineer and academic administrator serving as the president of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). On July 7, 2021, the Governing Board of the UPR unanimously requested his resignation and his term ended on July 31, 2021 . Early life and education Jorge Haddock Acevedo was born to his father of the same name and Francisca Acevedo, in Caguas, Puerto Rico on 15 August 1955. Haddock has two siblings, one of which is the actress Gilda Haddock. His mother, who held a master's degree, later divorced and raised her three children as a single mother with help of her father, Pedro "Don Peyo" Acevedo. Haddock's maternal grandfather, to whom Haddock later dedicated his doctoral thesis, was a waiter who had been able to send Francisca and her two brothers to college, one of whom became an accountant and the other an engineer.
