''Urosaurus'' is a genus of lizards, commonly known as tree lizards or brush lizards, belonging to the New World family Phrynosomatidae. Description Species in the genus ''Urosaurus'' can be distinguished from members of the genus '' Sceloporus'' by the presence of a gular (under neck) fold and granular lateral scales. They can be distinguished from members of the genus ''Uta'' by the presence of enlarged (sometimes only slightly) dorsal scales. It is important to note that these lizards come from a different family than lizards like the common side-blotched lizard which comes from the family 'Uta'. Reproduction ''Urosaurus'' have been used as a model system in lizard life-history studies, and populations produce two or more clutches of eggs per year. The species, which was formerly called simply the "tree lizard", has been used to study physiological changes during the fight-or-flight response as related to stress and aggressive competition. Its life history and costs of reproduction have been documented in field populations in New Mexico and Arizona. Spencer Fullerton Baird (; February 3, 1823 – August 19, 1887) was an American naturalist, ornithologist, ichthyologist, Herpetology, herpetologist, and museum curator. Baird was the first curator to be named at the Smithsonian Institution. He eventually served as assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian from 1850 to 1878, and as Secretary from 1878 until 1887. He was dedicated to expanding the natural history collections of the Smithsonian which he increased from 6,000 specimens in 1850 to over 2 million by the time of his death. Karl Patterson Schmidt (June 19, 1890 – September 26, 1957) was an American herpetologist. Family Schmidt was the son of George W. Schmidt and Margaret Patterson Schmidt. George W. Schmidt was a German professor, who, at the time of Karl Schmidt's birth, was teaching in Lake Forest, Illinois. His family left the city in 1907 and settled in Wisconsin. They worked on a farm near Stanley, Wisconsin, where his mother and his younger brother died in a fire on August 7, 1935. The brother, Franklin J. W. Charles Henry Tyler Townsend (5 December 1863 – 17 March 1944) was an American entomologist specializing in the study of tachinids (Tachinidae), a large and diverse family of flies (Diptera) with larvae that are parasitoids of other insects.
