Ureterp
Ureterp ( fry, Oerterp) is a village in the municipality of Opsterland in the east of Friesland, the Netherlands. After Gorredijk it is the second largest village of the municipality with a population of around 4,785 in January 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 1315 as Urathorp, and means "higher settlement". Ura (higher) has been added to distinguish from Olterterp. Ureterp developed in the late middle ages on a sandy ridge. In the 17th century, a second settlement developed at the sluice of the Drachtster Compagnonsvaart. The tower and the north face of Dutch Reformed church are from the 13th century. The church was extensively modified around 1800. Ureterp was home to 1,512 people in 1840. Saco Rienk De Boer
Saco Rienk DeBoer was born on September 7, 1883, in Ureterp, Opsterland, Friesland, Netherlands to architect Rienk Kornelius De Boer and avid gardener Antje Dictus Benedictus. He studied engineering and passed the Junior Engineer (surveyor) exam. He went on to study landscape architecture at The Royal Imperial School of Horticulture in Germany. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis, on the advice of doctors him to return home to Ureterp where he opened an office. His symptoms worsened in the summer of 1908, on doctor and family advice he emigrated to the United States in October 1908 be cured at the Dutch operated Bethesda Sanatarium in Maxwell, NM. In 1909 when Bethesda Sanitarium moved to Denver, he moved with it, planning the landscaping for the new building. He became the official Landscape Architect of Denver from 1910 to 1931. Gorredijk
Gorredijk ( fry, De Gordyk) is the largest town in the municipality of Opsterland, in the Dutch province of Friesland. Gorredijk had a population of 7,360 in 2019. The hamlets of Easterein and Kortezwaag are also part of the town. The latter was an independent village until 1962. Gorredijk and Kortezwaag then formed a double village as Gorredijk-Kortezwaag, but after a few years it was decided to shorten this to Gorredijk, so the older Kortezwaag became a neighborhood of Gorredijk in 1969. History The runs through the center of Gorredijk. The town is a so-called ''vlecke'' that was created by peat extraction. In the past, Gorredijk was mainly the place where goods were imported, stored and traded. A great amount of peat passed through Gorredijk, especially from the area behind Tijnje. Most of the land was owned by Ambrosius Ayso van Boelens. Around 1850, van Boelens started to cultivate the wilderness and turn it into farmland.
