Urban Military Academy
Urban Military Academy was a boarding and day school in Hollywood, California, for boys between the ages of six and fifteen. It was founded in 1905 by Mary McDonnell on Melrose Avenue at Wilcox; it later moved to 11600 Sunset Boulevard. At the time it opened, it was "the only private school for boys in the City." Its commandant was Major Harry Lee Black, who in 1928 helped found Black-Foxe Military Institute on Urban's original site. There was another site located on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and a block east of Barrington Avenue in West Los Angeles. This Academy was active in the late 1950s. Melrose Avenue
Melrose Avenue is a shopping, dining and entertainment destination in Los Angeles that starts at Santa Monica Boulevard, at the border between Beverly Hills and West Hollywood. It ends at Lucile Avenue in Silver Lake. Melrose runs north of Beverly Boulevard and south of Santa Monica Boulevard. Paved in 1909, Melrose Avenue's namesake comes from the Massachusetts town of the same name. Sunset Boulevard
Sunset Boulevard is a boulevard in the central and western part of Los Angeles, California, that stretches from the Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades east to Figueroa Street in Downtown Los Angeles. It is a major thoroughfare in the cities of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood (including a portion known as the Sunset Strip), as well as several districts in Los Angeles. Black-Foxe Military Institute
The Black-Foxe Military Institute was a private school in Hollywood, California, USA. It was located adjacent to the Wilshire Country Club to the west and south and the Los Angeles Tennis Club to the east. Black-Foxe was founded in 1928 by Charles E. Toberman, a Hollywood developer and financier, and Majors Earle Foxe and Harry Lee Black, both World War I veterans, on the site formerly occupied by Urban Military Academy, where Black had been commandant; Foxe was president, remaining in that post until 1960, Black commandant of cadets and Major Harry Gaver headmaster. From the start the school attracted the sons of people involved in the film industry, thanks to its location and Foxe's Hollywood connections. John Coleman Burroughs
John Coleman Burroughs (28 February 1913 – 22 February 1979) was an American illustrator known for his illustrations of the works of his father, Edgar Rice Burroughs. Life John Burroughs was born in Chicago, the son of Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of Tarzan, and of his first wife, Emma Centennia Hulbert. When he was six, the family moved to California and settled on the estate they renamed Tarzana. John briefly attended Page Military Academy but couldn't adjust to the strict regimen and was removed in midyear and tutored at home (he had contracted a mild case of polio, and his parents were worried about his being exposed to the disease in public schools). He later attended the Los Angeles Coaching School, Urban Military Academy, and Van Nuys High School, where he wrote and illustrated stories, graduating in 1930.
