Uperoleia
''Uperoleia'' is a genus of frog A frog is any member of a diverse and largely carnivorous group of short-bodied, tailless amphibians composing the order Anura (ανοὐρά, literally ''without tail'' in Ancient Greek). The oldest fossil "proto-frog" ''Triadobatrachus'' is ...s in the family Myobatrachidae. They are native to northern and eastern Australia and southern lowlands of New Guinea. These are small squat frogs, more commonly known as "toadlets". They have glandular skin, often with a pair of raised glands behind each eye, or on the flanks. They have bumpy, rough skin giving them the appearance of a small toad, hence the name "toadlet", although they are often called "gungans" in Queensland. There are two distinct types of calls—''Uperoleia'' species make either a "click" or a "squelch". Generally, the "clicking" ''Uperoleia'' have long thin inguinal glands that run along the dorsal surface, while the "squelching" ''Uperoleia'' have round inguinal glands restr ...

Wrinkled Toadlet
The wrinkled toadlet (''Uperoleia rugosa'') is a species of small, ground-dwelling frog in the family Myobatrachidae It is endemic to Australia. It is also commonly called the small-headed toadlet, red-groined toadlet or the chubby gungan. Description The wrinkled toadlet is a small frog, which varies largely in size. It is smaller on the coast of eastern Australia, and larger inland, ranging from . The dorsal surface is warty, and grey to brown, with dark markings. The ventral surface is smooth and grey. The parotoid glands and inguinal glands are large in comparison to the size of the frog, and yellowish in colour. Behind each knee, and in the groin are bright orange. The tadpoles hatch mostly black, with a distinct gold patch behind each eye. As development continues, the gold pigment spreads, until the tadpole is mottled grey and gold. The wrinkled toadlet has mostly unwebbed hands and feet, and the tympanum is not visible. Ecology and behavior The wrinkled toadlet in ...

Gurrumul's Toadlet
Gurrumul's toadlet (''Uperoleia gurrumuli'') is a species of frog in the family Myobatrachidae. It is endemic to the Wessel Islands of the Northern Territory, Australia. It is only known from 3 specimens (one female and two juveniles) collected in 1993 and was found to be a distinct species via genetic analysis, and thus little is known about its diagnostic features from other ''Uperoleia'' species. It can be distinguished from the stonemason's toadlet (''U. lithomoda'') by its rounded inguinal glands, but appears physically identical to the flood plain toadlet (''U. inundata''). It was named in honor of Yolngu musician Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (22 January 1971 – 25 July 2017), commonly known as Gurrumul and also referred to since his death as Dr G. Yunupingu, was an Aboriginal Australian musician of the Yolŋu peoples. A multi-instrumentalist, he played .... References Uperoleia Amphibians of the Northern Territory Frogs of Aust ...

Tyler's Toadlet
Tyler's toadlet is a species of ground frog that is found in coastal areas in southern New South Wales and eastern Victoria. Etymology The specific name ''tyleri'' honours Michael J. Tyler, an Australian herpetologist. Description This is a large frog (for its genus), up to about 35mm. It is dark to light brown with some orange/yellow spotting on the dorsal surface. A pale crown is present on the head of this species, however is less distinct than in ''U. fusca'' and ''U. laevigata''. It has large parotoid glands. There is a pale yellow patch in the armpits. The ventral surface of this species is fully pigmented dark blue/black. The thigh patch is yellow in colour. This species is very similar to the smooth toadlet. Ecology and behaviour This species is associated with dams and swamps in heathland, forest and cleared land. Its distribution is not fully determined. It has a solid distribution south of Jervis Bay Territory and there are some populations between Jervis Bay and S ...

Dusky Toadlet
The dusky toadlet (''Uperoleia fusca'') is a species of Australian ground-dwelling frog that inhabits coastal areas from just north of Sydney, New South Wales to mid-northern Queensland. Description The dusky toadlet reaches in length. It can be dark brown or grey-brown with lighter brown variegations or uniform dark brown on the dorsal surface, which is slightly rough and warty. There is normally a pale triangle shape on the head, starting from the eyes. There is a pale yellow patch in the armpit. It has moderate-sized parotoid glands. The ventral surface is white with a fair amount of dark blue/black speckling. There is an orange patch on the thighs. The flanks of this species are normally bluish in colour, giving it a dusky appearance. This species is very similar to the smooth toadlet, (''Uperoleia laevigata'') and differences between the two are discussed on that page. Ecology and behaviour This species inhabits coastal forest, bushland, heathland, and wet or dry scleroph ...

Marbled Toadlet
''Uperoleia marmorata'' commonly known as the marbled toadlet, is only known by the holotype collected in the Kimberley region of Western Australia by Gray in 1841. Description Gray describe the frog as "…black and green marbled, leaving a triangular greenish spot on its forehead, beneath lead colour". This species is likely to have other features similar to other ''Uperoleia'' species such as: red-orange patches in the groin and behind the knees, tubercles and large parotoid glands as well as a granular belly. The frog is likely to be about 30 mm in length. This frog most likely resembles the Mjoberg's toadlet (''Uperoleia mjobergi''), as they inhabit similar areas it is possible to speculate that the holotype of the marbled toadlet was mistake for a Mjoberg's toadlet. Ecology and behaviour Due to lack of records on this species habitat and behavioural characteristics have been difficult to assess. The frog is likely to breed in permanent and semi-permanent still water b ...

Smooth Toadlet
The smooth toadlet (''Uperoleia laevigata'') is a species of Australian ground-dwelling frog native to the coast and west of the ranges of south-east Queensland, all of eastern New South Wales and north-eastern Victoria. Description The smooth toadlet reaches 35mm in length. It is grey-brown to olive-brown above often with darker spots and blotches. There is normally a pale triangular patch on the head in front of the eyes and a pale yellow patch in the armpit. It has prominent parotoid glands. Its belly is white and there is a red patch in the thighs. Ecology and behaviour This frog is associated with dry forest, sclerophyll forest and cleared grassland/farmland along the coast, slopes and ranges. Males make a drawn out "arrrrk" call from around the breeding site, this can be anything from a large permanent dam to a flooded ditch or grassland. Calling males can be right at the waters edge to up to 20 metres away. Calling occurs from spring to autumn. After heavy rain many of t ...

Pilbara Toadlet
The tiny Pilbara toadlet (''Uperoleia saxatilis'')) is a species of frog in the family Myobatrachidae. It is endemic to the arid Pilbara region of Australia. It is a burrowing frog and is found in rocky gorges and creeks in the Pilbara following cyclonic rains. The species name ''saxatilis'' means "rock-dwelling". Description They are only about long with small limbs and a narrow snout. They have large glands and their toes have extensive webbing. They are brown with darker spotting and red femoral patches. They eat termites and small insects they find underground. Males sit in the rocks in places where "they can amplify and direct their call to the females". Their closest relative is thought to be the mole toadlet (''Uperoleia talpa''), which looks very similar but has a higher-pitched and more intense call. Discovery The Pilbara toadlet was recently identified as a new species through DNA analysis by researchers from the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, ...
