Up For The Cup (1950 Film)
''Up for the Cup'' is a 1950 British comedy film directed by Jack Raymond and starring Albert Modley, Mae Bacon, Helen Christie and Harold Berens. The film is a remake of the 1931 film '' Up for the Cup'', also directed by Jack Raymond. Plot The Yorkshire inventor of a loom, Albert Entwhistle, heads for London to see the Football Association Cup Final. He has a nightmare of a day when his wallet is stolen and then his girl friend stands him up. Chaos ensues, but in the end, Albert wins his girlfriend back and also a contract for his invention, along with a fortune in cash. Jack Raymond
Jack Raymond (1886–1953) was an English actor and film director. Born in Wimborne, Dorset in 1886, he began acting before the First World War in '' A Detective for a Day''. In 1921 he directed his first film and gradually he wound down his acting to concentrate completely on directing - making more than forty films in total before his death in 1953. He was associated with the Hepworth Studios of Walton on Thames, since his portrait appears on a studio publicity postcard when he was probably in his early twenties. He had a major success in 1930 with ''The Great Game'', one of the earliest films devoted to football and followed it up with '' Up for the Cup'' a year later. He remade '' Up for the Cup'' in 1950. Fred Groves (actor)
Fred Groves (8 August 1880 – 4 June 1955) was a British actor of the celebrated Groves acting family. On stage from 1896, he appeared in the original West End production of Noël Coward's ''Cavalcade'' (1931-2); and was a leading man in silent films, latterly becoming a character player in movies. He appeared in the 1925 play '' Number 17'' in the West End. He was a son of Charles Groves (1843-1909), a well-known Victorian and Edwardian comedic actor who made appearances on Broadway and in London's West End. He was also a nephew of the Fred Karno comedian Walter Groves (1856-1906), and a half-brother to the film and stage actor Charles Groves (1875-1955). John Kenneth George Melford Smith (5 September 1899 – 22 October 1972) was a British stage, film and television actor. Biography Melford was the younger brother of screenwriter and film director Austin Melford. On stage from the age of 12, Melford made his film debut in 1931. Wallas Eaton
Wallas Eaton (18 February 1917 – 3 November 1995), sometimes credited as Wallace Eaton or Wallis Eaton, was an English film, radio, television and theatre actor. He is perhaps best remembered for his voice roles between 1949 and 1960 in the BBC radio-comedy serial ''Take It from Here''. Early life Eaton was born in Leicester, Leicestershire, England. He was educated at the Alderman Newton School, and later would read History and English at Christ's College, Cambridge. Eaton joined the Army in 1940, and served with distinction during World War II, eventually becoming a major in charge of a searchlight battery. Acting career His first stage appearance was at the Theatre Royal in his home town of Leicester in 1936.
