''Untitled'' is a painting by Ellen Gallagher. It is in the collection of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States. According to Gallagher, this mixed media artwork represents a minstrel show. It comprises a collection of pieces of paper adhered to a canvas like a collage, including two pieces of penmanship paper in the middle. Groups of eyes and red lips are lightly painted onto the pieces of paper. The viewer must get close to the artwork to see the faint lips and eyes. Ellen Gallagher (born December 16, 1965) is an American artist. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions and is held in the permanent collections of many major museums. Her media include painting, works on paper, film and video. Some of her pieces refer to issues of Race (human categorization), race, and may combine formality with Ethnic stereotype, racial stereotypes and depict "ordering principles" society imposes. Background and education Gallagher was born on December 16, 1965, in Providence, Rhode Island. Referred to as African American, she is of Multiracial, biracial ethnicity; her father's heritage was from Cape Verde, in West Africa, Western Africa (but he was born in the United States), and her mother's background was Caucasian Irish Catholics, Irish Catholic. Mixed Media
In visual art, mixed media describes artwork in which more than one medium or material has been employed. Assemblages, collages, and sculpture are three common examples of art using different media. Minstrel Show
The minstrel show, also called minstrelsy, was an American form of racist theatrical entertainment developed in the early 19th century. Each show consisted of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music performances that depicted people specifically of African descent. The shows were performed by mostly white people wearing blackface make-up for the purpose of playing the role of black people. There were also some African-American performers and black-only minstrel groups that formed and toured. Penmanship
Penmanship is the technique of writing with the hand using a writing instrument. Today, this is most commonly done with a pen, or pencil, but throughout history has included many different implements. The various generic and formal historical styles of writing are called "hands" while an individual's style of penmanship is referred to as "handwriting". History Origins The earliest example of systematic writing is the Sumerian pictographic system found on clay tablets, which eventually developed around 3200 BC into a modified version called cuneiform which was impressed on wet clay with a sharpened reed. This form of writing eventually evolved into an ideographic system (where a sign represents an idea) and then to a syllabic system (where a sign represents a syllable). African Americans (also referred to as Black Americans and Afro-Americans) are an ethnic group consisting of Americans with partial or total ancestry from sub-Saharan Africa.
