University House, University Of Sheffield
University House is a large 6 floor building in the centre of the University of Sheffield's campus. Current usage The building is currently used to house part of the students' union on floors 1 to 4 and some administrative departments of the university. Floor 1 contains the Union's Bar One drinks outlet, floor 2 is the Union's Foundry and Fusion venue, floor 3 is largely devoted to the Union of students reception and shop areas, floor 4 contains a university run food court, floor 5 another university food area, bar and Senior Common Room and floor 6 the student finance office. Most of the university run departments, including the food courts and offices, are located in an isolated section of the building on the Western side. The students' union occupies the Eastern "Link Building" section. It is connected to the Octagon Centre on level 4 via a skyway. Sheffield Students' Union Concourse
Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire, England, whose name derives from the River Sheaf which runs through it. The city serves as the administrative centre of the City of Sheffield. Sheffield Students' Union, officially known as the University of Sheffield Students' Union, is the representative body of students at the University of Sheffield. It is run by a team of thirteen elected officers (7 full-time officers and 6 part-time officers). History The forerunner of the university was Firth College (1879) which had both a Student Common Room and student societies including an Athletics Union. Octagon Centre
The Octagon Centre, built in 1983, is a multi-purpose conference centre and music venue at the University of Sheffield, England. Situated in the Western Bank campus, it is joined by a skyway to University House and comprises an eight-sided auditorium with a capacity of 1,500 (1,000 seated), offices, meeting rooms, and a lounge with bar and patio. The Octagon is used for a variety of purposes, including examinations, lectures, graduation ceremonies, conferences, music concerts and club nights. History In 1958 the University Grants Committee agreed to allocate a sum of £175,000 for the construction of a new oval shaped theatre, which would have been built next to University House and was predicted to be completed for 1965. Skyway
A skyway, skybridge, skywalk, or sky walkway is an elevated type of pedway connecting two or more buildings in an urban area, or connecting elevated points within mountainous recreational zones. Urban skyways very often take the form of enclosed or covered footbridges that protect pedestrians from the weather. Open-top modern skyways in mountains now often have glass bottoms. Sometimes enclosed urban skywalks are made almost totally from glass, including ceilings, walls and floors. Also, some urban skyways function strictly as linear parks designed for walking. In North America skyways are usually owned by businesses, and are therefore not public spaces (compare with sidewalk).
