University Heights, Newark, New Jersey
University Heights is a neighborhood in Newark in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. It is so named because of the four academic institutions located within its boundaries: Rutgers University (Newark Campus), New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), New Jersey Medical School (Rutgers) and Essex County College. In total, the schools enroll approximately 32,000 degree-seeking students. The University Heights neighborhood is roughly bounded by University Avenue to the east, Orange Street to the north, Bergen Street to the west, and South Orange Avenue to the south. The schools are involved in the development of University Heights Science Park, a major research complex to be located between their campuses. The Public Health Research Institute on Warren Street relocated there in 2002. The area is home to Science Park High School as well. Warren Street/NJIT station is one of four underground stations on the Newark City Subway Line of the Newark Light Rail. It is the furthest station from Downtown Newark that is underground. The station is owned and service is operated by New Jersey Transit. The station has entrances on both sides of Lock Street, just north of Warren Street in University Heights. Essex County Jail
The old Essex County Jail is located in the University Heights section of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The jail is Essex County's oldest public building and a national landmark of value for its architectural and social history. The complex consists of about 20 structures of various size, age, and function ranging in date from the 1830s to 1930s. Collectively, they represent the evolution of American prison history over 100 years. For the quality of its architecture, its social history, and its links to the 1967 Newark Riots, this jail was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 3, 1991. The site has been abandoned since 1971 and remains property of the City of Newark. Essex County Courthouse
The Essex County Veterans Courthouse is located in Newark, New Jersey, United States. It was built in 1904 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 26, 1975. The building, designed by Cass Gilbert, has a four-story rotunda topped with a Tiffany skylight. It features artwork from some of the most well known artists of the American Renaissance period including ''Seated Lincoln'' by Gutzon Borglum. The annex was completed the 1960s. Eberhardt Hall, originally the Newark Orphan Asylum, is the oldest building at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). It is located at 323 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (formerly High Street), in the University Heights section of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. Built in 1856-57 its original purpose was to serve as a home for Newark's orphans. Eberhardt Hall is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a beautiful example of 19th-century Gothic Victorian architecture, in conjunction with 15th- and 16th-century castle design. History The castle-like building was designed by John Welch, an experienced church architect and one of the founders of American Institute of Architects. It is said to be that the building had the most advanced construction of the time.
